Mixed feelings...go with the right mindset
As you read this, bear in mind that my family and I stayed in one of the cheaper "primitive" cabins (cabin 20), and not the higher end cabins with more furnishings and amenities. I will try to post some pictures in a moment to assist in the description that follows.
Okay....IF you have ever been to a typical North American summer camp as a kid, and IF you liked that experience, and IF you are not "high maintenance" or a averse to the odors that waft from a common campground bathroom/shower stall, then, actually, Lake Vanare Cabins are quite enjoyable. Interestingly, it is the cheaper cabins (20-22) that have the BEST lake views and lake access. Each of these cabins have a nice screened in porch, with a great view of the lake....definitely the high point for the cabins. The porch was a GREAT place to enjoy breakfasts and dinners, and a nice place to hang out and play board games and just talk. The kitchens are tiny, the room is spartan, the bed mattresses are really "spring-saggy" and offer no support. You'll probably say "Oh my God!" when you first set down on the mattresses.
The shared bathrooms are passable, but definitely not for those who faint at the sight of a little mildew, hint of urine smell, or pooling ater in the shower stall. One thing that kind of annoyed me was that it appeared as though the shower curtain hadn't been replaced in a couple of years. It smelled unpleasant...so much so that I bought a new one at Walmart (along with a bathmat that was absent) so that my wife would feel a bit more comfortable in there. C'mon management! It's the little things like this that would go a long way.
Speaking of the management, I found the owner to be neither polite nor impolite. He was pleasant enough, but way more M.I.A. than I would be if I owned this business. I would have been more impressed had I seen him patrolling the premises looking for messes to clean up, boats that needed bailing after a heavy rain, and toilet paper that needed replacing in the stalls (we anticipated this, and brought our own...good thing).
Bottom line....IF you are young couple....resilient and adaptable to some inconvenience, than this place is definitely worthwhile. It made for a great base-camp for all that Lake George has to offer. I would say that the price (compared to other properties in the area) was reasonable. Our rate worked out to be $65/night. The place is also kid-friendly and family friendly.
