horrible
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/19/07
We had a very bad experience at Town & Country, and would NOT recommend it as a place to stay.
- SMELL: Our room had a terrible/ fairly strong musty/ sour/ dank smell. In a desperate attempt for fresh air, we ended up keeping the door and window open at all times when awake and in the room (and kept the windows open all night). Despite this, the horrid stench continued, and left us gasping for air.
-DIRTY: The room was somewhat dirty-i.e “gunk” left on the bathtub, door to bathroom appeared filthy and like it had never been wiped down, furniture was dirty.
-CEILING: Huge amounts of what looked like rust surrounded the edges of the ceiling: A “hanging” ceiling was hung under the ceiling, with the only intent I can imagine to be to hide even more of the rust. However, the result was that the ceiling was low- and made the room seem claustrophobic.
-BATHROOM: Dirty as aforementioned, also very small. Also, an optional heat lamp that was garishly red. Often, I’d accidentally flip the wrong light switch, and the room would light up in this horrifying red, reminded me of a horror story. As well, did not provide shampoo or conditioner.
-STAFF: Mostly friendly, however one who identified herself as the weekend assistant manager was decidedly unfriendly, bordering on hostile.
- UNFAIR PAYMENT & CANCELLATION POLICY: When we checked in (a Friday night), they made us pay for our four nights immediately. Early Saturday morning, we decided this was not an enjoyable place to stay, so we politely asked the staff if we could cut our stay short by one day (i.e. leave Monday instead of Tuesday). Even though this was more than 50 hours notice, they would not let us do this. The unfriendly assistant manager kept smugly saying “you’re welcome to check out a day early, but we won’t refund your money (for the one night we wanted to check out early). We ended up leaving early anyway, and cutting our losses.
(Addenum: at the very last minute, as we checked out, the Assistant Manager refunded our money for the one night we checked out early).
-BEDS: The beds were adequately comfortable, however the flat sheet didn’t quite fit the mattress, and started to come off during the night. As well, my blanket had holes in it (one the size of an orange), in addition to cigarette burns on the other blanket on the other bed. On a less important note, ugly bedspreads.
-SPARSENESS: The room was sparsely decorated, ugly/ chipped/ dirty furniture, no pictures on the walls, small TV, no coffee maker. The only toiletry provided was packaged hand soap (and plastic cups).
RENOVATIONS: I believe I read on their website that they are newly renovated. I can’t imagine what this could have entailed, due to my huge list of complaints I’ve detailed above.
New Carpets, and wallpapered right over the old 70’s era wood paneling. Wallpaper peeling in many spots revealing some ugly water damage to the panels.
INTERNET: Wireless provided for free, however very poor reception and frequently “crashed”.
GOOD PARTS: To be fair, there were some good aspects to our stay, including delicious free coffee at the front desk (about a 1 block walk from our room), free parking, 3 nice swimming pools and a hot tub. As well the place looks very nice from the outside and on their website (appears much nicer than our room was).
OUR ADVICE: stay far away, or at least ask to see your room first before you pay. Don’t be like us, who paid for 4 nights before seeing our room, and then were left with little options but to stay in this horrid place, as we couldn’t get a refund to leave even a day early. We left early anyways.
