I've been going with my family to this same resort for over a decade and this time was the first time we've had a negative experience. We always camp with electric and water near the river. The camp grounds used to be clean and we actually felt bad for leaving cigarette butts on the ground, so we would clean up the campsite before we left. This time the grounds were littered with beer cans, boxes, cups, and torn off branches. People used to bring dogs and walk them on leashes. This year every dog I saw was without a leash (some without owners!). The security used to walk from campsite to campsite talking to the campers asking how they were and hoping to fix problems. This year security drove down the road in golf carts and never said a thing to us (save once when one of our group had to find them). The camp grounds used to be a fun and slightly loud place until quiet hours at 11 pm. This year the party didn't stop until about 4 am (this was a lot of fun when trying to wake up for a float in the morning!). In previous years the security has told us that we would have to quiet down during quiet hours. This year one of our group had to ask the security to keep them quiet (to which the security almost seemed bothered). The shower and bathrooms used to tolerable, but farther of a trip (remedied by porta-john). This year the new bathroom and shower building was closer, but was so dirty that I refused to shower in it. So, to rap this up, War Eagle is not what it used to be and i wouldn't recommend it as a family place (especially for children). But, if you are a teenager who likes to get drunk, smoke pot, pass out at 4 am, dump out your dogs, litter, watch the security drive by twice a day, and leave the place a mess for the future campers, PLEASE GO TO WAR EAGLE. I'd like to see how crazy and out of control their facilities would have to get before they changed something. We're looking for a new place for next year.
We have been going to War Eagle for 13 years as our yearly family outing. Have never had any problems until this year. We have family from Kansas, Missouri, & Ok. come every year. Friday about half of us were already there when we get a call from our nephew from the office and told us that they wouldn't rent them a tent camping spot because they told them they weren't going to float. After finding out that there were more people going to float than was expected, they decided to go ahead and float so they went back inside and told the lady that they changed their mind and would float. She told them she didn't think they knew what they wanted, 1st you don't want to float and then you want to float so just go some place else. So they did. They drove 2 hours home. Then that evening, 2 people come to the spot next to us, each driving their vehicles, when we were told only 1 vehicle per camp site. A few hours later 2 more vehicles came to the same camp site and were there all weekend. Where was security?
That night there was a party going on about 6 or 8 sites down that lasted until 4 am. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind people having a good time. We have our fun too. But if quiet time is 11 pm and at 1 am you still have to yell over the music to talk to someone in your own camp, I think it should be shut down. The party came to the river for a swim at 2 am right behind our camp and they were there for an hour yelling and screaming the entire time. When we talked to security about it Sat. afternoon, we were told that they came and shut them down at 11 pm. NOT Some our group had tent sights across the road from us. The underage kids next to them tried to bum beer and cigarettes from them all weekend but didn't offer to share their pot with anyone. Where was security then? Up until this year security always walked through the camp grounds every 2 hours or so. This year they were riding around in golf carts and we didn"t see them but 3 or 4 times all weekend. I am truly disappointed in our trip to War Eagle this year. We will never be back.
The old security man is senile and slightly on the crazy side. The first night he ask us to turn our music down because quite time started at 11:00. We did no problem. The next night after all of our group had went to bed except for two of us he came back over and started harrassing them. It wasn't even eleven and he told them they were being too loud. They didn't even have the music on and it was two of them just sitting outside talking. They ask what they were doing wrong and he starting threatening to take them to jail. He told them he was the law around here and they better do what he said. Next thing I know people are knocking on the door. It is the old security guy and a ranger. They told us we had to pack and leave because we disrespected the old guy. It was 12:30 at night and we had been on the river all day, so we were still a little intoxicated and tired. I ask the ranger what happened and he said after the security guy told them to quite down they purposely started setting off one of their car alarms. This never happened! They were locking their cars up so they could come in. They said we wouldn't get our money back because once again we disrespected the old man. I am a school teacher and I believe I am honest and responsible. We did nothing to warrant what these two men did to us. We could have wreck or killed someone else considering we were all still intoxicated, but they didn't care. It was like we were in a bad nightmare and couldn't do anything about it. We went to Tahlaquah and got a room at the Holiday Inn. Should have stayed there to begin with. That is where we always stay, but we thought it would be great to stay together a a group in a cabin. I have been going down the river for 20 years and have never experienced something like this. I wish I could report this to someone, but have no clue who it would be. I will never stay at War Eagle again. I don't see how they stay in business. I know for a fact we are a pretty tame bunch, so I wonder what that security guy does when he gets a really rowdy bunch. And it was pretty expensive to get kicked out of and not get your money back. $255 a night. My advice is to stay far, far away from this place I know we will never go back. It will be Holiday Inn or Eagle Bluff. These are two of the best places to stay.
I made reservations for an R V site and then had to cancel (because of medical problems) 5 days later--which was 9 days before arrival. They put 2 nights and a float trip deposit on my credit card. After chasing the person who handles credit cards, she said there is no refund--they couldn't rent my spot because they were holding it for me, and they were so busy that this caused them to lose revenue. If they were so busy, I would think in 9 days they could rent my spot. I am sure it is a nice place, but just be sure you will not have to cancel--it will cost you
Friendly staff, Don't stay in the motel though if you go down there, The AC is on permanent eco mode and the room was hot the whole time, It will only come on for a few minutes and then shut off. Better to pay a little more and stay in town. Rooms don't have a tv, fridge, or anything. Stay in town.
VERY CLEAN, CABINS WERE BEAUTIFUL, VERY NICE PEOPLE WORKING THERE. WE HAD A LARGE GROUP AND THERE WAS SECURITY, BUT THEY LEFT US ALONE. MADE ME FEEL GOOD THAT THEY WERE WALKING AROUND AND MAKING SURE NOTHING WAS GETTING OUT OF HAND. NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER
I recently went to war eagle without a reservation, but when we decided to go on the 16 mile trip (reservation required) the desk staff signed us right up. I try to go to War Eagle every year. I have yet to find a dissapointing experience.
If you ever go to Talequah, Ok. to float the river go to War Eagle. They have everything you would want and you don't have to drive anywhere. Everything is right there. It is an awesome time to get away with friends or the family. The people at War Eagle are super nice and they have fair prices on the raft rentals. So if you are thinking of going to Tahlequah to float the river give them a call. You will have a blast.
War Eagle Restort denied me access with my hearing dog to the their housing. So the whole 2 days when i was there i did was worry about my hearing dog who had to stay with my mom for time being. Which i filled a complaint with Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.
Their cabins are nice but they are not wheelchair accessable.
