Great Getaway

Ok, I went here Nov 25-27 with my eyes open - reviews on this site were very balanced (i.e., reviewers either loved or hated this joint), whereas on other sites the reviews were about 9 good for each 1 bad. So I was aware that some had strong dislikes about Tower 23. This was a quiet Sun thru Tues getaway for my wife & I which is among the travel we've been doing this year celebrating our 28th year together. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tower 23.
JRDN was a great experience with both tasty, well prepared & presented seltections coupled with solid waitstaff (our guy, Sammy, was outstanding . . . a former active duty marine with whom I, a former amphib Navy gator, swapped a lot of great memories amidst his attentive service of our table). A little pricey, but cost was not out of the question for gourmet cuisine & top notch service on the boardwalk with full table linens & an unobstructed ocean view.
I agree with one critical review I saw before our stay - try to stay on the third floor (we were on the second floor in a full ocean view room . . . great view, etc. but we heard the guy above us pacing in the morning . . . and he was a VERY early riser). Aside from that, our room was very clean & modernly decorate, had a great king bed and a nice private patio where we spent hours the first evening marveling at the parasail boarders. The public areas were beautifully maintained & clean, heavily padded lounge chairs facing the beach were adorned with clean terry cloth linens each morning, and every evening the areas were lit softly coupled with gas heaters to cut the edge from the cold.
Yes, next door at Kona's, you can get a massive breakfast every morning for about the same price as a side order of bacon at JRDN which, to some, that & its trendy decor would suggest Tower 23 is misplaced in PB. If it were in OB, I'd agree, but PB - from my wife & my days at SDSU almost 30 years ago until today - has always been an eclectic transition point between MB & La Jolla, having more upscale aspects of the latter interspersed with more modest aspects of the former (altho our boardwalk jogs each morning revealed much new construction on the MB boardwalk which is going well into the upscale category). MB historically was always a transition notch above OB, PB a transition notch up from MB on your segue northward to upscale La Jolla. Accordingly, Tower 23 is a taste of La Jolla while, to maintain a perfectly rounded eclectic PB experience, you can indulge the more modest at Kona next door.
I would recommend this place for a romantic getaway, but its not a place for families and you gotta be nuts to come here for business (go stay somewhere inland where you won't be distracted by the beach). This is a place to relax.
