Do not Bother
By FoodGuy5, 05/31/09
Do not make the mistake of coming here on a Saturday night for cocktails. This is a very poor excuse for a "trendy" spot. The service is terrible, even after ordering multiple bottles of liquor for our group.

NIGHTMARE/DISGUSTING - DON'T STAY HERE.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/11/09
THIS PLACE IS A NIGHTMARE!!!! THE LOCATION OF THE HOTEL IS NOT SAFE. WHEN YOU FIRST WALK -IN. YOU SEE A RED DARK STAIRCASE, THAT LEADS TO A DARK LOBBY. THE ROOMS ARE SMALL AND EVERYTHING IN THE ROOM IS OLD. THE BEDS ARE UNCOMFORTABLE. THE FLOOR RUGS ARE DISGUSTING. THE PLASMA TV WAS BROKEN. THE PICTURES ARE DECEIVING. DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE. THE VIEWS ARE HORRIBLE. ALL YOU SEE ARE DIRTY STREETS AND OLD BUILDING. IT'S NOT WORTH $300.00 A NIGHT. WE STAYED FOR 10 MINUTES AND CHECKOUT. THEY NEVER GAVE US BACK OUR MONEY.. AFTER WE COMPLAINED HOW DISAPPOINTED WE WERE..... STAY AT THE SOHO GRAND!!! MUCH NICER...

Gross
By Ryan, 10/07/07
This hotel was gross. The neighborhood is in transition and there are some great assets in the area, but the hotel is nasty and not worth the money!

Fantastic stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/28/07
All around an A+ experience. The room was fabulous, the bed was dream-like comfortable. The bathroom very cool. Floor to ceiling windows give an unobstructed view, since THOR is the only tall building for blocks and blocks. If you're on an upper floor (request one), you see all the bridges and the financial district. Location is convenient if you're visiting all of NYC. It's close to Chinatown and Little Italy, and great restaurants. The hotel's restaurant is good -- both for breakfast and dinner. Staff was extremely attentive. Highly recommend THOR.

Hit and Miss; Lots of irritants.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/06/07
Website and photos exaggerate a bit. "Floor to ceiling windows" includes frosted glass that means you have almost no view from your bed or when sitting down. Look at the photo on their website: notice the view is from WAY ABOVE the bed, that's why it looks like you have a great view when in reality you do not, when in bed. Booked Unique King Room at $600 a night on 18th floor. Rooms might be big for Manhattan, but tiny for the rest of the world. Not enough outlets, no dressers, small closet. Cool bathrooms. 4-head shower looked cool, but doors didn't close and water leaked all over floor. They tried to fix, couldn't. Moved us into the room next door. Wet spots around bed in new room. Minibar didn't work (everything warm inside). TV color was way off and not adjustable. Themrostat clicked for 10 min when touched, toilet wouldn't stop running. We nicely complained and got a whopping $75 discount... after spending $2000 and booking an extra night. Hotel staff was very nice, great service. Restaurant staff was snotty and arrogant, which is funny since the restaurant is nothing special, nor are the drinks. Bad neighborhood? Fast food? Neighborhood is fine. Food is amazing and anything but fast food in that area. Stantion Social and Kampuchea are within 2-3 blocks. Teany Tea (half block away) is great for coffee and breakfast. Too bad for all the little irritating things, because otherwise this place could be great. Location is perfect. But the devil is in the details... and the Rivington needs to focus more on details. And when a room has that many problems, they would be wise to comp a night or upgrade a room. Their lack of trying to "make things right" led me to post this review and recommend NOT staying there.

Overpriced for neighborhood
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/01/06
I stayed in the Rivington in January 2006. It is the only nice or new building in the middle of a sort of a slum area known as the lower east side, complete with dirty sidewalks, run down storefronts flag the hotel. My room was very dark by design. The view was on the fifth floor in the back. The shower looked right out into the shaftways of the adjoining old tenament buidlings. Luckily, the shower steamed up quickly as if it did not the neighbors would have a full view of a nude me. The lobby is quite tight. The staff is friendly. There are a lot of noisey bars around with a partying crowd - lots of car honking, drunken youths. The restaurants in the area were of the fast food type. I feel that if I am going to pay $385 a night I need a little more in terms of the immediate area.

Dreamy
By kitsunetsuki, 06/26/06
My experience at the Rivington was exceptional. The guy who took us up to our room was unbelievably friendly and showed us a couple of other rooms that were different stlyes than ours. We got a corner room with the chartreuse theme and a view all the way around from floor to ceiling windows/balcony. We could see all the way up to the Chrysler Building and across to Brooklyn, and on the other side down to the Financial District (the view of the trade center would have been sensational). The room had everything the website described and more...a king Tempurpedic bed (heaven!), overstuffed down pillows, luxury grade terrycloth robes, flat screen tv, heated floor tiles in BR, oversized walk-in shower and of course the super fancy minibar & bath goodies. Also, upon request you can borrow a DVD player from the front desk - no charge. So you bought those old questionable quality concert discs in the village today? Go back to your room and check them out - you can return them tomorrow instead of discovering they're not up to snuff when you've gotten home... The neighborhood - if you're sick of staying in mid-town - you've seen it all, and are ready for a more native approach to the city - this is the place. A trip to Katz Deli just around the corner is a trip back in time - it is the quintessential New York experience. After that, your feet can take you to all parts of the Village, Tribeca, Chelsea, Soho, Little Italy, Chinatown, the Financial District and ground zero, and of course the LES. The immediate location of the hotel is interesting - a mix of the old school discount stores and newer clubs and eateries. It is not a seedy neighborhood as some people have said - but I can see why some visitors might think so if they are used to the touristy mid-town area... Finally, our stay was August 2005 and the restaurant was not open yet, so I can't make comments there. Because of this we also got a reduced rate for their "soft opening". I'm not sure at full price we'll be back for a while, but trust me - I think of going back to the Rivington all the time.
