For the most charming (and best value) California beach experience
The Venice Beach House is that wonderful, most unlikely kind of place rarely found in Southern California: an old charm B&B inn one block from famous Venice Beach (which happens to be where I live). The house is a large, bungalow-style inn built in the first heyday of Venice Beach: the 1910s. I found out about it from a friend about 1 year ago, and suggested to some family members that they stay there. They loved it, and I have stayed there a couple times myself even though it's only a 25 minute walk from my apartment. For an early 20th century Venice Beach feel, this place can not be beat. Good breakfast too.
A couple of things to look out for. The place can get a bit cold in the winter, so ask for an extra blanket if you're there in the cooler months. Also, if you're there in the warm months, the south side of the house can get a bit noisy from the bar scene on Washington Blvd. Since you may want to leave your window open in the warm months, you may want to request a room on the north or east side of the house because of possible noise. Despite these mild shortcomings, this is one of the best lodges in all of L.A. Highly recommended.
