Home away from home.

European flavour down to the wonderful fabrics, but most evident at the generous breakfast buffet. Friendly and homey, and yes, we would return. Close to the market, Rideau Centre, and Parliament, walking is a plus. Thanks for a great stay.

Good things don't change
By ,
I first came to Gasthaus on a colleague's recommendation. I frequently travel on business to Ottawa and certain level of comfort and service is important as lack of it affects my performance at work. I came to love this little inn, so conveniently close to both business and pleasure/dining locations. I don't look for another location for my business travel to Ottawa. With high speed wireless in every room and a full boardroom with a conference phone, projector and all kinds of supporting gadgets, I can get all my work done and even have meetings or smaller events on site. Owners are so hospitable and I came to know them well over the years. No other place comes close to full buffet breakfast they offer. Sabina recently repainted and redecorated the rooms and put flat paner TVs in all rooms. I find it very handy that I can also park my car at the hotel. There is nothing you will miss while staying at this family owned hotel. Five stars all the way!

Will stay here again for sure
By ,
My husband celebrated his milestone birthday at this lovely place. Sabina was wonderful in helping with my surprise for him - she recommended a terrific pastry shop just down the street for an amazing cake and helped me with selection. When we checked in, the cake was already stored in the fridge in the kitchen. One of the staff brought it to our room shortly after we got into our room, complete with lit up candles and chilled champagne. A friend recommended this place for a getaway, and now I understand why. I loved the heritage building in stone, the location, tastefully appointed rooms, luxurious bedding, the service we received from the owner and her staff. We had tickets to see a show and Sabina was very helpful with directions. She had many recommendations for restaurants and lounges and we were very pleased with the places she helped us select for dinner and drinks on both evenings. My husband is never completely offline with the kind of business he's in, so high speed wireless Internet in all rooms was a very nice touch. Breakfast is absolutely terrific, both in quantity and quality. I loved the bedsheets, they were very soft and silky. You rarely see that kind of quality linens in hotels nowadays. My husband was very much impressed with flat panel TV - from what we understood all rooms have those. We loved lounging by the fireplace in the large conference room/dining room at the ground floor in the evening. Having our coffee and breakfast outside in the courtyard garden was a treat as well. I haven't tasted such great coffee since our vacation in Europe. The Swiss muesli offered every morning with breakfast were out of this world. Next time we come we will book ourselves into one of Sabina's suites, which come complete with a large jacuzzi and a fireplace. Probably the only downside of this place is the fact there is no elevator, as hotel is in a heritage building. It wasn't an issue for us, but it may be an issue for people travelling with a lot of luggage or for elderly travellers.

Great stay at the Gasthaus
By ,
My husband and I booked a romantic getaway at this small, family run hotel, after a friend of ours recommended it. Location is terrific, so close to all amenities. The heritage building has tremendous charm. Rooms have a lot of character and they are very clean and superbly maintained. The owner displays a great sense of pride in her property and goes out of her way in many ways to accomodate her guests. There is a sense of warmth you get from staying at a small establishment that you cannot ever get from staying at a brand name hotel chain. We stayed at one of the suites and had a great time. Buffet breakfast was terrific, it will keep you going throughout the day and set you off to a great start. The breakfast in bed we received on one of the mornings was even better :). We felt truly pampered. Courtyard garden at the back of the Inn was very pleasant in the morning and afternoon. My husband was amazed at the business amenities available at the hotel (a large boardroom with full conference and technological amenities). He is considering organizing an upcoming business event at the hotel. We may have been fussy and demanding guests in some ways (we required additional towels, had problems setting up our wireless, needed access to fridge after hours, misplaced our key), but Sabina and her staff exhibited exemplary patience and hospitality. We were very much impressed and will definitely stay at this B&B when we come to Ottawa again.

Great B&B - Wonderful stay!
By ,
Gasthaus Switzerland has gotten better over the years we've been going there. The owners have always been friendly and accommodating as has the house staff. I love it that it's so close to all the restaurants and attractions (including the canal) and if you want to go to the grocery store, it's right down the block. We've stayed here a few times and have had different rooms. Every one of them has been clean and comfortable. Why there are even ANY negative reviews is beyond me. It's a great change from the hotel chains. It's clean and comfortable and the service is great! That's the reason we keep coming back here. And I'm a pretty picky person when it comes to hotels and b&bs. I have stayed at many B&Bs around the world. This one is up there with the best! It's great place all in all and I look forward to going back this winter!

satisfied
By ,
I stayed at the Gasththaus a few nights. The room was charming and the bed was comfortable. I loved the Coffee, I truly must say, worth the drive! And, the staff was very approchable. I had a nice morning chat with the owner, which is not something you get to at every hotel! All in all, I'm satisfied and would certainly come back to the Gasthaus next time I'm in Ottawa.

not going back
By ,
hi there, well I had to visit some friends in Ottawa and I checked this website and most of the comments were good!! but for me...I had problems to check in at the front desk (a young girl was there but was probably starting this job and the owner was not there to help her), well got finally my room but didn't look like the picture!!! smaller, and what a bathroom!!! smaller that the closet!!! I was in the 3rd floor so I guess you have to pay extra money to have a decent bathroom !!! It was noisy but because of the students on the streets so...and breakfast...well maybe I should have come earlier to have a fresh crescent and to have a piece of cheese...so I had eggs and a coffee (but they first started by giving me a tea...) anyway at least the girls were nice but too busy to take care of me (only have one coffee, nobody ask for a second one so I left)...and cleaning service, well not that good for the washroom and some hairs in my shower (but I guess it is because it is a small one ) nad you can't find anybody to complain because there is only one girl at the front desk and no possibility to talk to the owner (she was out of town in cottage this girl told me) so...well it is downtown , a good thing, girls try to be nice but seem not to care , and be carefull with your bedroom's choice!! for this price and because of the other comments I was expecting something else....

A home away from home
By ,
The Gasthaus Switzerland Inn is ideal for parents like me and my husband visiting their children at The University of Ottawa. It has a great location in the city centre, just next to the Byward Market, Parliament and most importantly, the University! Breakfast is delicious, especially the Swiss Muesli and the coffee is fantastic -(they have a swiss espresso machine and import coffee beans roasted in Switzerland)! The hosts, Sabina and Joseph, are warm and very welcoming, and have been running the establishment for over 20 years, making sure the rooms are up to Swiss standards! I had a wonderful time and certainly plan on going again in September!

Would never go back!
By ,
When we arrived at the hotel, we rang the bell and announced ourselves. Walked down the stairs to reception and found that the girl did not remember our name, it was only a matter of 30 seconds. There was not the usual warm welcome one might expect of a B&B. No help with dragging the luggage up 3 flights of stairs, no elevator here. The room wss very small unlike the picture of it which gave the impression of a little more room around the beds. Small closet, difficult to get into. Air conditioning was not at all effective, still felt very warm. The breakfast was not interesting or tasty at all. The bread was dry (stale) no cheese was left. So what could be left for someone who cannot eat eggs. More bread I guess. Was asked whether I would like coffee or tea, asked for tea, got coffee. No smiles, no great service either. In their book they suggested a tip for service, I don't think so! When it was time to leave had to drag luggage down the same 3 flights of stairs. When I went to the front desk to check out I was asked if I did damage to her stairs when I rolled the suitcase down. There is barely enough room to carry it down, nearly fell down the stairs. All in all, would never return to the hotel. There must be better some other place in Ottawa.

Do stay at this hotel
By ,
I have stayed at the Gasthaus Switzerland dozens of times over the last twenty years. The breakfasts are famously good; the service is warm and courteous; the ambience is casual and comfortable. Several times I have organized events in the area and booked visiting professionals at the Gasthaus. It is bigger than a bed and breakfast but family-run, and it has the amenities of a much larger hotel. Worth a trip to Ottawa just to stay there!
