The Inn was really great! The house was built in 1700's, high ceilings, stained glass windows and marble floors in the eating area, Select Comfort mattress in our room, wonderful sheets (that I am now going to purchase for MY house, I liked them so much!), and a gas fireplace that, for the 40 degree weather we visited in, was most inviting and welcoming! Also had a jacuzzi tub and a separate shower/bathroom, as well as spa bathrobes. Our room also had a terrific laz-y-boy type chair that was extremely comfortable to read in near the fire while my husband took a nap!
The breakfast, at this time, was limited because of a relatively new law passed by Maryland, that any Inn with more than so many bedrooms must install a commercial kitchen, but they still had a lot to offer for an expanded continental breakfast, including a hot belgian waffle station, (make your own), with wild Maine blueberries if you chose, fresh cut fruits and whole fruits, bagels ,toast and jellies, peanut butter, cold and hot cereals, coffee cakes, boiled eggs (which helped with the protein), string mozzarella cheese sticks, (again helped with the protein as hubby is a diabetic), , yogurts, etc. Really, as much as they could offer without being allowed to cook. They finally got the licensing for the kitchen required and are currently working on building the commercial kitchen. The home itself is Victorian, and you are using their fine china, silver, etc, so it didn't feel like eating at HOJO as someone else reviewed. Really they were doing all they could under the circumstances, and I understand before the law they offered a really wonderfully cooked breakfast that they are working hard toward getting started again once they have everything to code, which I believe their newsletter said would be quite soon.
They were all more than helpful! The owner was very outgoing at breakfast, and his youngest son, who checked us in, was also very helpful to us for getting my computer hooked up to their signal, as well as helping us find really great local restaurants ("the Blue Crab Grille" was fabulous, and only about 5 minutes away!) He wasn't immediately talkative, (at that age, either was my son until someone engaged him in conversation, so that may also be what another reviewer experienced), but he was very nice, very courteous and more than helpful and kind to me, both with setting me up, and putting together a specialized "birthday pkg" for my husband. The lady who helped out at check-in was also very sweet, exceptionally kind and helpful and got us settled into the right room.
We were there in late winter, so the grounds were, of course, "winterized", i.e. the rose garden was not in bloom, so obviously it looked as dead as anyone else's would at this time of year, etc, but they had white lights on at night, lining the stone balcony that overlooks the lawn, white candle lights in the windows, and, really, the 1700's building was quite charming and comfortable. The had a putting green, and golf clubs available for anyone to use, hammock, two seat swing for anyone , also, but with the 30 degree nights, and whipping wind and 40 degree days, we did not take advantage of those amenities. Being on a hill, they were really getting some wind, so not surprised by the other reviewer having to "take some leaves off the hammock", but, they have a lot of grounds and walking paths, surrounded by trees, so of course with the wind leaves will be found wherever they finally land. Everything we saw was clean, comfortable, and maintained. (The house IS over 300 years old!)
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, enjoyed every relaxing minute, and LOVED that it was about 4 minutes from Delaware, and just 7 miles from Pennsylvania, so could use this as a central location, and venture out to many different areas for day trips, (Amish Country, Longwood Gardens, outlets, Baltimore, etc). Lots of good local restaurant choices, as well, for lunch/dinner. All in all, a great visit!
