In the hills west of Portland, where the elite have lived since the 1880s, sits the former mansion of William MacMaster, a financier and businessman who made his fortune in an economic boom in the last part of the 19th Century. His house, now a classic bed and breakfast, still sits high above the city next to Washington Park . Built in 1886, the huge, Queen Anne-style mansion has seven guest rooms and several other common rooms or showpiece rooms. One of 14 registered historical landmarks in the area, the house is located only five minutes uphill from downtown .

A Wonderful Step Back in Time
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/04/07
A visit to the Macmaster House Bed and Breakfast exemplifies the experience of staying at a B&B. Classic elegance and history meets modern conveniences. Although I selected a room with a shared bath, I ended up only sharing the bathroom once or twice during my visit, and then with only 1 or 2 other rooms. (The B&B also offers rooms with private bath). Breakfast was another highlight of my stay - prepared by the Innkeeper on several occasions, or by the Chef on weekends. Keeping with the northwest spirit, the coffee was equally exceptional. If you're up for a nice walk, you're just a few blocks from Portland city life on 23rd street - lined with shops, restaurants, wine bars and coffee houses. On several occasions, I also ventured "downtown" for some nightlife - about a 15 to 20 minute walk from the Inn. If you can handle ample walking, no car is needed. I truly enjoyed my stay, and would return again. The innkeepers Skip and Louise were gracious and available when needed. The location is ideal. The Inn itself is a throw back to another time and place - though I must admit, the Wi-Fi access was a much needed amenity I used. And I must admit, I turned on the TV (complete with cable) on a few occasions.

Wonderful memories
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/10/06
The MacMaster House gives you a taste of how life was lived in a different era. Upon opening the front door we were greeted by the warmth and sounds of a crackling fire in the parlor and Innkeepers Skip and Louise's invitation to rest over a glass of wine. Our party stayed in 4 rooms, each nicely decorated in period furniture with a fireplace and linens on the beds that truly made it hard to get up in the morning. But we did and were treated to a fabulous multi-course breakfast and freshly brewed coffee. We live in Portland and will certainly choose the MacMaster House for a weekend getaway again.

I can't wait to go back
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/07/06
Recently we stayed at the MacMaster House in Portland and had a wonderful time. The location couldn't be better, close to shops, restaurants, parks and gardens. All within walking distance. The building has such beautiful touches like the wall murals painted by a local artist. We are already looking forward to a visit back. We also enjoyed the company of Callie, the pet rabbit that greets guests in the office. The innkeepers are most helpful but unintrusive.

We wouldn't stay there again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/12/05
From the outside the home is beautiful, but you can tell it's in bad need of repairs before you ever walk in. You are greeted with a foul smell that you will soon discover is a pet rabbit kept in the office -- very strong odor. The house is in bad need of repairs and it shows in nearly every room. While the location is advertised as a big selling point, overall I think this house is overpriced. Now I understand why there is a 14 day cancellation policy. We feel we were taken advantage of and the house was misrepresented. We would never stay there again.
