Exceptional Weekend Escape Experience
By Harold, 1/27/12
My wife and I spent a long weekend here in January 2012 and had an excellent experience in the LadyBug cabin. We love hiking in the Shenandoah's and getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city and thought we'd give this place a try. It's on the short list of places we'd like to go back to. Overall, I'd recommend spending some time on their informative website picking out a cabin that best fits your tastes. The experience promised was exactly the experience delivered. Some special points warrant mention: Karen (owns the cabin with her husband Ralph) was one of the friendliest and enthusiastic folks I've met. Upon arrival, she had freshly baked cookies, chocolate brownies, biscotti, as well as a bottle of freshly carbonated spring water (from a well on their property) ready for our enjoyment. After a quick walkthrough, she brought us some kindling for the wood stove and marshmallows for the campfire she was going to set-up for us at sundown. The wood stove added a great ambiance to the cabin and roasting marshmallows over a campfire in the crisp mountain night was a great way to kick off our experience. The cabin itself looked almost brand new. The downstairs was a large dining area with mini-fridge, microwave, and wood-burning stove. The upstairs was a large bedroom with beautiful views of the surrounding mountainside and a private bathroom. The exposed timber frame is quite a sight to behold and complements the decor of the cabin well. The only thing I missed was a nice big tub to soak in, but I understand some of their other cabins do have this feature. I might have to give that a try next time. We had a great time walking around both the nature trail that goes around the property and taking a longer hike down Jewell Hollow Road that forms the border with Shenandoah National Park. For meals, our favorite part was taking a short drive into downtown Luray. Uncle Buck's is a great little diner for breakfast and the rest of Luray has a bunch of interesting little stores that warrant an hour or two of exploring. In summary, this place delivers a quiet, peaceful retreat that seems ideal for couples looking to get away for a long weekend. The website sets high expectations and delivers on them.

Incredible cabin that you wont want to leave!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/19/11
What an incredible find online! The cabin was very beautiful, clean, and well decorated. We enjoyed looking at all the intricate details of the furniture and decor from aroung the world as well as the beautiful wood ceiling made with "wooden" dowels. The smell of wood burning fireplace as we entered was so warming especially after a long day of traveling. The hospitality was so wonderful, warm, and welcoming. My family loved it and are we are ready to return this winter.

A great escape!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/19/11
My girlfriend and I stayed at the Bumble Bee cabin and found it to be everything we were hoping for. The Alpine theme was very fitting and the cabin was clean and very comfortable. Karen and Ralph Riddle are exceptional hosts and will go out of their way to ensure your stay is all that it can be. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a romantic get away to a cabin in the Virginia woods.

We didn't want to leave! This place is great!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/4/11
Me and my wife hadn't been on a vacation in almost three years. On a spur of the moment, we decided to take a trip to Luray Virginia. A quick search on the internet brought up a number of choices. We called and quickly set everything up. When we arrived, we were greeted warmly and given a tour right away. They provided us with a free bottle of wine and home baked goodies. The cabins are incredibly warm and comfortable. The personal attention to detail that the owners have given to each of the cabins is very evident in there furnishings and overall decor. If you are looking for an escape from reality at a romantic location, then Shadow Mountain Escape is the perfect place for you. Worth every dime.

Best Anniversary Ever
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/7/10
Shadow Mountain Escape was exactly what we hoped it would be. The Riddles have created a little bit of heaven with their cabins. We stayed in the Butterfly Loft. It was cozy and warm. It was clean and comfortable. The gift basket was incredible, as was the wine. Karen even made us a cake for our anniversary. She is a wonderful host! And that's the way she made us feel, as though we were welcome guests. The book of things to do was perfect: we used it as a guide for the entire weekend. Karen's recommendations for the local scene were right on the money. If she recommends it, it's worth doing. We had a great time at the camp fire roasting marshmallows. Playing darts in La Cantina was a blast. Shadow Mountain Escapes has it all, and we will surely return.

A perfect secluded hideaway.....
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/8/10
My wife and I were looking for a place to get away for a long weekend. We were looking for a place that was tranquil, relaxing, and close enough to where we lived that we could ride our motorcycles to weekend hideaway. Shadow Mountain Escape exceeded our expectations in every aspect; then for good measure theset/ exceeded standards we had not even considered. Karen and Ralph are enthusiastic and energetic in-keepers, who meet us at the entrance of their Inn with open arms, big smiles, and warn hospitality. Upon arrival at our cabin we discovered complementary wine, fabulous home-made Chocolate Chip Cookies (award-winning, I might add) and accommodations that were meant to relax and de-stress any/all guests. Our wknd at Shadow Mountain Escape was highlighted by beautiful surroundings, interaction with great people, and a serene atmosphere. Nestled at the base of the Blue Ridge Parkway, near Luray, the location for this terrific Inn is ideal, in terms of affording guest’s tranquility, yet access to local conveniences. Our only regret is that we could not stay longer. We will remedy that situation the next time we visit.

A fantastic, romantic getaway!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/10/10
WOW! We are so thankful to have stumbled across SME when doing some online research for a little getaway for our one year anniversary. Our stay was fantastic, and exceeded both our expectations! Everything in the Butterfly loft was perfect - the cookies, the wine, the privacy, the bed (so comfy), and the amazing surroundings! AND thanks for the anniversary cake, what a wonderful surprise. Our only regret is that we didn't make reservations for a longer stay. We will be returning soon, and again and again, to experience everything SME & the area has to offer. P.S. We loved all the butterflies flocking to your flowers + butterfly baskets!

Must not miss this wonderful mountain escape!!
By Tegan, 5/26/10
My two sisters and I recently stayed at the Shadow Mountain Escape and let me just say that it was an absolute dream! I corresponded with Karen and she was such a sweetheart and made sure every little detail was perfect and she answered any questions I had promptly and courteously. First off, the location of the cabins couldn’t be better; the area is extremely peaceful and serene, not to mention, beautiful! It only took us two hours to get here from Washington D.C so it is perfect for a quick weekend escape from the city. Unfortunately, we could only stay for one night but as soon as my sisters and I arrived, we were wishing that we could stay an entire week! The cabin is decorated beautifully and has every little thing you could ask for. There was a basket of delicious goodies waiting for us when we entered the cabin, along with a wonderful bottle of wine. We BBQ’d that night which was made a lot easier with all the tools that were provided for our convenience. There was also a campfire prepared for us; all we had to do was light a match! We roasted marshmallows that had been left for us along with the other goodies. There was also the friendliest cat ever who wandered the property and greeted us whenever we walked outside. We had a lot of fun exploring around the property, walking around the woods and exploring the different parts of the cabin. All in all, it was a fantastic trip and we are planning on several trips back!

A Little Piece of Paradise
By LisaS, 4/30/10
I can honestly say the only thing I didnt like was not having phone service but the peace, tranquility, serenity and beauty made up for that. The cabin is absolutely beautiful, spotlessly clean, the owner Karen is an absolute delight, the grounds are beautifully kept, the treats & the wine left for us was to die for and we cant wait to go back.

What a way to spend my 40th Birthday!! :)
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/29/10
We booked the dragonfly cabin to celebrate my 40th Birthday. It was so nice to get away from home and the children.. What a wonderful way to get away with my husband. From the moment we arrived we were greated with love! We had a decorated table with birthday cake, balloons, banner along with yummy cookies and bread. The grounds are beautiful. We walked along the trail and learned the propertys rich history. We took many pictures to remember our time here. We look forward to coming back and bringing our family.
