Decent place to stay with a great location
By MEOOHMY, 6/25/12
We spent this past weekend at Maddox. The location is great for trips to the national park. Very bike friendly. Super nice staff! Very helpful. Trash picked-up twice a day. Store is nicely stocked. Firewood and ice available for purchase. We were in the tent section with electric and water. No problems with noise though they do group tents together as they come in. The bathrooms were sufficient though they do get muddy if it rains and can be messy if kids are allowed to run wild. They should get some plastic horse hair mats for the entrances to cut down on the mud inside.

Stay at Maddox every year
By Cheryl, 5/23/12
We are here every Memorial day w/e, in 2012 it will be our 6th year there. We have a 5th wheel so we don't need the bathrooms. The sites are a little close but I've been to CGs where they were closer. I have the phone # of the guard at the gate to report loud groups after 11:15p as I had to do last year. He told them right away and it got quiet for the night. Chincoteague is very bike-friendly and that's how we get around in the town. We love the island. Maddox is a nice place to stay...Rumor has it they will close in the next few years...I hope that's just a rumor. What's important to you? Access to beach? Getting around the island? The ice cream? Place to ride bikes? Everyone is different, some don't like Maddox, others love it. I am in the middle. I would recommend it if you could do your personal hygiene in your own RV.

Bathrooms are very old; they look like circa 1965.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/16/11
Bathrooms are very old; they look like circa 1965. We stay at a lot of places and these are about the worst we have seen; a real nightmare and full of misquotes.

Not bad, not bad
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/12/11
The location is the best thing about this campground. Assateague is just a few minutes by bike away. There are 3 things that irked me. 1.) The bathroom doors have no hinge to prevent them from slamming shut in the middle of the night. 2.) The campground was fairly empty, and the second night we were there, a family of about 15 were placed right beside us. 3.) No monitoring of "quiet time." We had to go report one group that was really loud until at least 2 a.m. Friday night was less crowded than Saturday when a few more sites filled up. I couldn't imagine being here in high season, however. The sites are so close together, it would be like a can of sardines!

We stay there 2 times a year!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/29/11
My husband and I used to stay at Toms Cove several years ago, and we were not very happy campers. We thought we would give Maddox a try, probably 6-7years ago, and we have not gone back to Toms Cove. We come here 2 times a year, once in July and once in Sept., both for 10 days. I love the closeness to everything at Maddox. The people that work here are extremely friendly and helpful. The only thing I don't like is the cat problem. They had it calmed down somewhat a year ago, but they were back in Sept. getting into everything. I realize this is an island wide problem with the cats and I love animals, I travel with 2 small dogs, they should be able to do something about the cat population! One last thing, it is nice and quiet here which is what I look for in a vacation, so I guess my husband, our dogs and I will continue to come!!

bathrooms are filthy
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/8/10
i have been there four times this summer and very often in the past. it seems that the camp has become a favorite of many mexicans this year and they are filthy when it comes to the bathrooms. paper towels and toilet paper seems to mound up on the floor and i know for a fact that there are trashcans. even so far as to use the showers as toilets. the two woman they have cleaning them go around four or five times a day on busy weekends and never seem to catch up. and probably dont get paid near enough. it is a great place as far as location five or ten minutes from everything on the island.

If my 21-yr-old daughter liked it, it must be good
She said it was really nice. They had a tent (note: NO Reservation Required for tents as long as you don't need electric hookup) and had a picnic table and a nice setup. No details from me, but I am confirming that the other reviews are correct. She saw the horses at the shore, cooked outside and had zero complaints.. so it must be good.

Best Campground on the Island
By John, 7/2/09
Maddox Family CG is the best on Chincoteague. My family has been going every year since 2000, and my wife remembers camping here when she was a child (lets just say it was sometime in the '70's...). The campgound is very well maintained, clean, and generally quiet. We have a popup camper, and usually have a spot under the trees. Larger RV's seem to have their own area, and tent campers are farther away. The sites are level, with good space between campsites. The bathrooms and showers are always clean by campground standards. Any mess I've encountered is from inconsiderate campers who throw thier trash on the floor (and those who insist on smoking in the bathrooms!!). The pool is nice enough, but is in the open, and tends to get too hot inthe afternoon. But then, again, you're there to go to the beach, so how important is the pool, anyway?? The website (such as it is) still shows a mini golf coursse, but that hasn't been there for years. They REALLY should update their web page. The gulls are very annoying, but only if people insist on feeding them. If people wouldn't encourage them to be in the campsites, they would go elsewhere. But every year, I see a group laughing and throwing food to the skyrats, then cursing when the same birds go after their dinner.... STOP FEEDING THE BIRDS!!!! MAddox is closest to Assateague (the beach), is next door to a hotel ( in case someone in your party needs an actual room), and is within walking/waddling distance to the only Mickie D's on the Island. I've visited the other campgorunds on Chicoteague, and they are all far noisier, diritier, and closer packed than Maddox, as well as being farther away from the actual beach. Pines Grove is OK, but with fewer amenities than Maddox, and would be my second choice to camp. Not only is Toms Cove the furthest from the beach, I think you'd be taking your life in your hands to "camp" there - with all the motor bikes and unsupervised children racing around there. I'd skip Chincoteague/Assateague altogether if Tom's Cove was my only alternative. These are just my opinions, but as far as it goes, I'll take Maddox this year and every year till I die.

Loved it!
By Heather, 3/21/09
We went in June, so it wasn't very crowded. The service was very friendly, the bathrooms were exceptionally clean when we went. The grounds were beautiful and well kept. Plenty of places for the kids to ride their bikes in the evenings. The only problems we had were the incredibly obnoxious seagulls, they were terrible.

Our Favorite Weekend Getaway
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/21/08
We love getting away for the weekend and camping here. People are friendly and service is great. Bathrooms can get messy but if people would clean up after themselves it wouldn't be such a problem. Location is great its close to the beach. I recommend Maddox to everyone.
