We were cheated out of $100!

In 2007, my wife's sister and her family were to visit from Chicago. We had planned to take them to visit Branson while they were with us in Missouri. We made reservations for all eight of us to stay in our favorite place - Alpine Lodge - where my wife and I had stayed numerous times over the past 15-20 years. I called Dorothy Polk and made a reservation, providing check number 6940 for $100 dated June 18, 2007 as a deposit. Subsequently, our relatives' plans changed. I called Dorothy and told her we would need to cancel the reservation and asked that she send our deposit back. Knowing that we were frequent visitors, she instead suggested she hold our deposit and that we could apply it to our next visit. Because of our longstanding relationship with Dorothy we took her word without documentation of this offer. We had taken an extended vacation in California earlier in 2007 and were unable to return prior to the end of the year. Dorothy had not indicated there was a time limit on the deposit or we would have insisted that she repay it to us. This week, we called Alpine Lodge to make a reservation for a short stay in late July. Apparently, the ownership is transitioning from Jim & Dorothy to their son David Polk. His wife accepted our reservation yesterday and then David left us a message last night that Dorothy had no recollection of her promise to honor the deposit. I called earlier today to provide the check number, date and amount and both David and his wife were rude and told me that they would not honor the committment made by his mother as she did not recall making it. After 15 years or more of customer loyalty, I had hoped for more. I realize that I should have gotten Dorothy's offer to hold the deposit in writing or insisted that she return it, but I trusted her based on our longstanding relationship. Both David and his wife were short on the phone and essentially accused us of lying despite the fact that I provided the details of the deposit check and suggested they check their reservation and bank statement records. Apparently, they value repeat customers so little that they would let $100 sever the relationship. This is compounded in that we are frequently asked for recommendations about places to stay in the area and we have always recommended Alpine Lodge. In the future, we will take every opportunity to caution people NOT to stay at Alpine Lodge because of the unethical business practices of its owners.
