Great house, fun time for ADULTS.
Yes, I would recommend this experience to those of you with a sense of adventure - you can't be shy or uncomfortable acting in a silly role - and you must understand the nuances of a CENTURY home.
My sister and brother-in-law visited last year and after hearing about their visit, we decided that we needed to attend too.
Yes, the house is a century house, custom built with 100+ year old architectural and engineering styles, material and technology. If you're not sure what that entails, I urge you to do your homework and check it out. In those days, typical homes had far fewer amenities than by today’s standards. For example, bathrooms at the Stone Lion were built into the individual rooms for OUR comfort – most turn-of-the-century homes still had chamber pots and/or outhouses (I, for one, am glad she put in bathrooms!!). At the turn of the century, electricity was a new phenomenon and IF they were serviced by electricity, homes were typically very dimly lit, electrically scarce, places. All of that said, if you expect to spend the evening in 1907 home outfitted with 2009 amenities, you will be disappointed. The “feel” of the house would be completely lost if those upgrades were made and I for one, am glad that Becky has chosen to maintain the house (mostly) historically rather than “modernizing” it completely.
Regarding the murder mystery – if you’re not going to play along, there are plenty of other B&B’s or hotels for you! This supposed to be fun and silly, so take it at that. Becky plays the part well and may offend some, but again, take it with a grain of salt. If you don’t want to participate there are numerous other places you can stay. The people make the fun – if you are apprehensive or don’t want to participate, it ruins the fun for everyone.
Several folks commented that they thought she was drinking – we did not see that at ALL. Were we told to BYOB in the email instructions and you could choose to drink or not. It was totally up to you. The food was good, could’ve been different, but it was good. During dinner, Becky gave us some historical background on traditional Victorian table service and manners, which I thought was very interesting. She seemed to “snap” at a couple of us when we passed plates the 21st century American way, but it was just in fun. Having traveled to Europe several times, their customs make much more sense to me now because of what she told us.
Are there some things that could be different to improve the experience? Yep, there are. Checking in could be done a bit differently, including more instructions on where to go to do it. Becky does come across a bit short sometimes, but it’s all in fun. If you’re easily offended, either put on your big girl/boy panties and prepare for it, or go elsewhere. Are there repairs that could be made to the house? Yes, but again, it’s a Century house so just expect it. If you want a 5-Star Waldorf Astoria, well, this isn’t it. BUT most B&B’s are in old houses, with “old house” issues. Again, be prepared for their nuances and personalities.
The house was and is, grand. It is beautifully decorated in period antiques. My husband – who is an Army Ranger and takes everything very seriously, was NOT thrilled about having to go and is critical of everything – had a GREAT time and would go back BECAUSE he understood what to expect.
Go and enjoy yourself, it’s worth the fun.
