Good value in expensive Key West

I stayed at the Budget Key West Hotel in January 2006 and was pleased.
This hotel is located in the 'old town' heritage area of Key West, beside the public wharves, an area that is very pleasant for walking. Key West is working har to maintain its century-old character with lovely antique buildings all over this section. The rental car didn't move for most of three days.
This is a 'budget' hotel with price of US$129 - lower than any other I found on the Web in Key West. This means it has no pool, small rooms, and not a single tree on the premises. Two of the rooms are on the busy street, but traffic quiets down overnight (this is a small town!). I was moved to the quieter back at my request on check-in.
My room was small but clean, well maintained, and properly equipped with wall air conditioner, ceiling fan, fridge, microwave, very basic set of dishes, and clean linen changed daily. I saw no sign of hurricane damage.
Don't stay here if you want to sit by the hotel bar or pool, but do if you want to spend a short time getting to know Key West's old town. Stay there now before they fix it up more and start charging the going rates.
