What a horrible experience!
I am a resident of Hilo, Hawaii and my mom was finally making a trip out to visit me. Not wanting to stay at my house with my roommates, she chose to stay at a bed and breakfast. We searched and searched for some place with an ideal atmosphere and nice accomodations. We chose this inn because of it's amazing location on the waterfall (although later found out it was a bit farther away from town than we had hoped). The views were beautiful and I was very excited for my mom to experience lush, tropical Hawaii.
Unfortunately, my mom had flight problems coming in to Honolulu (it was a Thursday evening) and was not going to be able to make her first night at the Inn so I called to inform them that she would not make her first night's reservation (she had reserved 3 nights). Well, apparently they are having phone problems because I was never able to get through. I called several times on two different numbers and finally left a message. We called again the next day (several times) and left more messages saying we would be there for her final two nights. When we arrived at the Inn the owner informed us that she could stay tonight, but that they had cancelled her reservation for the next night. Even though my mom had reserved the room months ahead of time. I could not believe it that they had cancelled one night reservation without even speaking to either of us.
I was very upset that we wouldn't be able to find another place and spoke to the owner inquiring why they cancelled her reservation. He was extremely rude to both of us and told us that we should have called to tell them what was going on! I informed him that we had left at least three messages and could never get through to their house. He confirmed that they were having phone problems, but was not willing to admit that he hadn't gotten the messages (or had ignored them) we had left. He argued and argued with us about it until I felt that my mother would be too uncomfortable staying at such a place and we left. I was so disappointed that someone would treat a visitor in such a way! The fact that THEY had phone issues caused them to cancel my mother's reservation! Apparently they had lined someone else up to stay in her room and decided to go ahead and cancel my mom's reservation on their own...obviously not a very professional decision. I was shocked and luckily we were able to find a much better, friendlier accomodation.
If you're looking to stay with someone who is friendly, welcoming, and willing to accomodate you as best as they can I would definitely choose a different bed and breakfast.
