Burgh Island Hotel, Kingsbridge

If it was not for the perseverance of the present owners, this architectural gem might have been lost. They bought the island and hotel in 1985 and set about restoring it to its former glory. In its heyday it was associated with the rich and famous, including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and the famous novelist, Agatha Christie, who found inspiration for several of her books here. Today the island is the site of the deluxe Burgh Island Hotel, a tranquil retreat for all who venture across from Bigbury, either by walking during low tide or by sea tractor during high tide. The hotel has unique art deco features and a very high standard of cuisine. The accommodation is arranged as suites which all have a bathroom, sitting room, and bedroom. Each is completely unique and has a different theme. Amenities on the island include a tennis court, a natural sea-water rock pool, The Pilchard Inn pub, a spa, and even a helipad, should you decide to arrive via helicopter. The hotel also hosts a number of glamorous events including balls, wine tasting parties, and murder mystery dinners.
