I was pleasantly surprised!
After reading many reviews of the Mayan Sea Garden, I was very worried, but once we checked in and started the vacation, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, there is somewhat of an "ant" problem, and yes, the second bedroom was horrible and would have been torture on anyone who had to sleep in it, but all-in-all, those were the worst things about the resort itself.
Everything else couldn't have been more perfect for us. Now, mind you, it was my roommate and I who went. I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a romantic getaway. There were many families with children there, but if you don't mind a little splashing in the pool and some noise, then it's a great place.
RECOMMENDATIONS: I do have a couple of recommendations. First, when you get to the airport, go for the shuttle. The cabs are $30 USD and the shuttle is $7.50 USD. We were not told that you had to purchase a roundtrip ticket in order to get a shuttle BACK to the airport so make sure you purchase that when you arrive. We had to cab it back and it cost us. I don't think the shuttle that we took was in any way affiliated with the Mayan Sea Garden because this woman Alicia got on the shuttle with us and talked us into going to a timeshare seminar at the Pueblo Bonito. I wasn't interested at first, but the things she offered us were too good to pass up. She gave us three $50 USD certificates totalling 1,500 pesos to put towards dinner and drinks at either of the Pueblo Bonito resorts, she gave us two certificates worth $40 USD each to go to Stone Island, and she gave us a certificate for a Mexican Fiesta that was an all you can eat and drink party. The only problem with that one is, although she TOLD us the parties are on Tues. and Sat., during the off-season the parties are only on Saturdays so we were not able to go. Also, if you get a Stone Island certificate, tell her you want your certificate to include the activities (banana ride and dune buggy). The horses on that island seem like they would carry fleas and ticks so I wouldn't recommend that.
When we went to our Pueblo Bonito timeshare seminar, we played good husband, bad wife (yes, my roommate is a man). I was so witchy that the guy just let us go after about 20 mins. and we picked up our certificates and left.
The beach at the resort had a ton of jellyfish on it, but since I'm not a beach person, I stayed at the pool and that was perfect for me.
