Old fashioned luxury, but with modern facilities

My husband and I stayed in the Pavillon wing of the hotel which overlooks the stunning gardens and fabulous pools. Our room was quite large and bright and well furnished. Each room has a balcony which is also spacious and furnished with cushioned cane chairs and a table.
Our bathroom was also large with a shower over the bath and there was also a bidet. Plenty of toiletries were provided and the towels were quite new and large and were changed twice a day. There is a hairdryer on the wall, but I took my own as it is a lot faster. Surprisingly there were also robes on the back of the door.
There is a digital safe in the wardrobe which was very handy and there was also a fridge which contained water and soft drinks (but quite pricey).
We found the room to be very quiet and were not disturbed by anyone above or below. The air conditioning was also effective. Storage is not a problem either as there are plenty of drawers and wardrobe space plus additional space for suitcases, etc.
We opted for half board during our 7 night stay and thought the choice and quality of food was really good and there was loads to suit all tastes. Both breakfast and dinner were buffet style so you just tried whatever you liked the look and smell of. Drinks were provided at breakfast, but were all chargeable at dinner.
The gardens are absolutely superb and are tended daily. The pools are also very well maintained and cleaned each morning. Sunbeds are plentiful and come with very thick cushions and sunshades. Towels are also provided by the pool. Drinks and snacks are available at the pool and can be charged to you room.
The location of the hotel is what really sells the hotel. The main Old Winter Palace is at the front of the hotel area and looks across to the Nile. Luxor temple is just a 2 minute walk away and the Souk is just behind that. Taxis, horse carriages and boats are located outside the hotel so that you do not have to walk very far for anything.
There is also a lovely terrace at the front of the main hotel where you can sit and have a drink whilst watching the sun go down. We also saw four weddings taking place just across the road whilst sipping our drinks.
All in all, we had a great time and would certainly go back for another stay. The staff were very helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
Just to mention, the New Winter Palace wing is now no longer, but there are plans to build something in its place. As yet a date has not been confirmed, but they think it will probably be when building at the Old Cataract in Aswan has been completed.
We got a much better exchange rate by changing our money at Luxor airport than if we had done so here. If you are travelling there soon then be aware that the temperature was 45 degrees when we left on Monday 18th May.
