Great bargain with nice staff
First, this Holiday Inn Resort is more like the Crowne Plaza brand. Most of the clean, spacious rooms overlook the ocean and have a deluxe bath, many with separate shower. Some have folding doors at the bathtub so you look out at the ocean from your oversized bathtub. The property is very well maintained inside and out.
The hotel has an eager-to-please staff, not the typical reticent hospitality employees in China. Most know enough English for their job, or find someone who does. They are generally well trained to make the guests feel comfortable and relaxed. The beach is across a narrow road with speed limit of 40 km/hr. The yellow-brown powder sand is clean with a slow drop off in the South China Sea. The large tropical pool has three different depths to accomodate children of different ages, and the adjacent hot fish massage pool is quite an experience for 30Y.
During my stay, there were maybe a dozen or two Europeans (mostly German) and a handful of American couples. Most of the guests were Chinese couples and families. This is not the Cancun-type of environment. If you want that, go to one of the other glitzy Sanya beaches. Downtown is a 30Y taxi drive, maybe 15 minutes at most. By all means go there for your dinner, as the typical four-dish dinner is about 70Y for two, versus the 180Y each at the hotel. The included breakfast buffet was ample with a good variety of Chinese and Western dishes.
At the exchange rate of 7.67Y to the dollar, you can live well here and eat out every night for less than $100 a day for two. You can spend far more in Sanya, but if you want a nice quiet beach vacation, try the Holiday Inn Resort Sanya Bay. Be sure a pay the little extra for the deluxe seaview rooms, rather than the rooms overlooking reclaimed land and the airport in the rear.
