Of the camp grounds I have stayed in the South Rim is average for condition. The value is unsurpassed. I was there in July the busy season. No crowds in the campground. Very quiet and peaceful. The coyote howling at night un-nerved my sister-in-law but I loved it. Very cheap stay compared to any private or state campgrounds. Didn't have to drive anywhere. Short 50 yard walk from my spot to the bus that delivered us to heaven and earthly needs.
Camping on both the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon was fantastic. Everything about the Grand Canyon has been my most memorable vacation. Caution: The Ravens can unzip your tent doors and rob you blind, seriously. Hiking has to be my most enjoyable time at the Grand Canyon; a real test of your strength and endurance. I recommend hiking rim-to-rim, south to north, taking the South Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch on the way to the North Rim; and on the way back take the Bright Angle Trail from Phantom Ranch back to the South Rim. It is my heart felt belief that God’s front room picture window looks over the Grand Canyon.
We loved this canpground. It was very quiet and just steps from the rim and a short walk from the lodge. There was even a shower house nearby. Sunsets are fabulous. Be warned though, it is quite cold at night in spring.
We've stayed in lots of national park (and other) campgrounds and I was very impressed with the North Rim campground. The best thing I noticed was how spacious the sites were unlike most N.P. campgrounds that squeeze everyone into very small sites. The sites were all in the shady forest, which is very nice in the heat of the day. There are some sites right on the rim but all are a fairly short walk to the rim. If you need a group site, group site #3 was right on the rim. The store had a very good supply of basic groceries and camping supplies and the shower and laundry building were clean with enough facilities that we never had to wait. They take quarters--not tokens. I find it very handy to get rolls of quarters before leaving home. The showers cost $1.50 for 7 minutes, washers $1.50 and dryers $1.00.
