A very nice place to stay
The NE Nueva Estancia hotel is located right next to (south of) the Nueva Estancia hotel. I have spent over 25 nights there. It’s located on the main entrance to the city as you come from the south. It is a little far from the nice areas of the city (Campestre) and the mall which are farther north but close to the bus station and the shoe malls. This isn’t to say that it’s in a bad area, quite the contrary.
It will cost about $250pesos to take a taxi to the airport which is about 25 min away. They have a full-time taxi guy named Limon who speaks perfect English without an accent. He is nice and you should ask for him. He’s one of the bright spots of my stay there. The rooms are big and comfortable. We negotiated a rate of about $750-$800 per night including breakfast and this might be useful information to have in hand when you make your reservation. For this reason, I geve them all five bars on the value scale. If the price went above $1100pesos, so would my expectations. They are located right next to the Nueva Estancia hotel which is not as fancy but also very nice and clean. I wrote a review on it. They might be willing to negotiate depending on capacity, especially if you knew what a good rate was when you started negotiating.
I would stay at this hotel again but would strongly recommend that you stay in “the tower” because the rooms around the pool are not very clean and the drainage was poorly designed so the rooms have a sewer smell. They have very few king-sized beds so if you want one, you should make a reservation. There are two restaurants: El Domo which is a cafeteria with breakfast lunch and dinner. The other is Ma Come No. The name is strange but it’s very elegant, the service is excellent and the food is very good! It's a little slower than you might expect so allow a little more time. The other bright spot of this hotel is the head waiter with a strange name I can’t remember. This guy will kill himself to make you happy. He has a “whatever it takes” attitude. After eating there so many times you can understand why someone might want to order off the menu, but he gave me everything I ever asked for. He even went so far as to send a guy across the street for a subway sandwich and served it to me because that’s what I felt like having that day! No kidding. If you ever stay there, you will see for yourself and if he ever left, I would recommend eating/staying somewhere else!
The nightlife is mostly in a plaza farther north. There are several places: Bar-ecito and Rio Latino in the same plaza and then Mint which is located farther away. The last place (Mint) is a real dive but the others are nice and there is a Tepan-yaki style place called Sushi-Ito in the same plaza. A taxi to get there is about 75pesos.
A note about the people of Leon. I found them to be much more service oriented than any other place in Mexico. You can expect to be treated well in the bank, at the restaurants and at this hotel. (sadly, Mint was another story)
One last tip. In the tower, the internet is better on the even floors than on odd ones. There is only one elevator so consider that when you choose your room.
