Description

The Big Sleep is set opposite Cardiff International Arena , within an easy walk of Cardiff Bay. The imposing tower block is one of the tallest hotels in the city. It hides an interior that is the last word in modern design, with light and spacious rooms, pale colors and stripped wood flooring. Large, modern rooms have king-sized beds, 15-channel satellite TV, air-conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities and fantastic views across the city. It also boasts of some rooms that were designed by the actor, John Malkovich. So fans and name-droppers should definitely consider staying here.

Kids called it the Big Dump.
By ,
We stayed in a family room with our three schoolaged kids. This hotel needs to renovate its already basic facilities. Though this is a nonsmoking hotel, our bathroom (and part of the corridor) smelled strongly of smoke, probably as a result of a ventilation problem. The single chair was upholstered in some unfathomable shaggy cloth (the same fabric used in the curtains!?) that was matted with countless food drippings. We had to put a towel over it to sit on it. Likewise the carpet had a sticky patina that we didn't dare walk barefoot on. The paint is old, peeling, and stained particularly in the bathroom. While the beds and bath fixtures were clean, the trash under the bed and dirty carpet, etc. ruined the experience. Furthermore the bunk bed was assembled wrong, so that the top bunk had no guard rail on the side where the ladder was. We turned the open side to the wall and our son had to climb up via the headboard. We stayed over a Saturday night when innumerable hen- and stag parties were staying in the hotel. Despite this the room was quiet. The front desk was clearly understaffed for the volume of guests and as a result service was rushed and curt. Breakfast was basic but good though the staff struggled to keep up with the many guests. I understand this is a bargain hotel but the management has taken too many shortcuts - with staff, with improvements, and with perks - such as charging for wireless. Mr. Malkovich should think twice about the product he is associating himself with.

It's not a place to come once more
By ,
If it wasn't deep night we would find another place to stay. They said at their site they had a car parking. But it's too small for such hotel. So we had to pay extra money for leaving your car at nearby parking. The curtains were VERY dusty.Brrrrrr! And the stuff is not helpfull at all. If you are going to stay at this hotel you should be ready to solve your problems yourself!

It was nice for college students
By ,
Young people would get a kick out of this place - free breakfast, strange John Malcolvich (sp?) references, and a decent lounge, but the locals think it's a dive.

Best Hotel
By ,
On my first trip to Cardiff I stayed in the Big Sleep it was a nice entrance the service was brilliant everyone was helpful and were all in their uniforms dressed smartly. The room was really clean nothing was out of place and the bed was nice to sleep in. The location of the hotel is really convenient as its not far away from anything

Less then standard
By ,
From looking at the online images of this hotel it actually looked really nice and had that slick, contemporary feel to it... boooy was I wrong! On arrival everything seemed standard and looked like the hotel had had a cheap makeover. Once we checked in and made our way to our room I still had hope that room was going to be nice, however once I opened the door to the room I was gutted to see how very basic it actually was! The room itself was spacious and clean, however the curtains were dirty and the room just looked very tacky with a dodgy makeover of sky blue paint. The bed was uncomfortable and very quickly that you could hear the springs in the bed every time you moved. Once you would eventually fall asleep you would soon be woken up to the noise of trains passing by as the hotel is located right next a railway track. The shower was poor as it was not powerful and if the sink was in use it made things worse. Car parking is very limited and is on a first come first serve basis; luckily the hotel wasn’t at that time, what a surprise! Staff seemed friendly, however one of the managers seemed arrogant and unhelpful. The only good thing I would say about this hotel is that it is located about 5/10 minute’s walk to City Centre. In a nutshell this hotel is over-rated and should no way be a four star hotel!
