An unsafe dump.

Let me first begin by saying that I have fairly low standards when it comes to hotels. I am completely satisfied by staying in a basic, cheapo, generic hotel. As long as the hotel is clean and things work, you won't hear me complaining. I've stayed at the Milner, twice, and it can't even meet those two very basic standards.
The first time I stayed there, the room was dirty, the hair dryer didn't work, the elevator was broken for a while, and one of the windows in the room fell apart when I was trying to close it, and it slammed shut (in a lifetime of opening and closing windows, that's the first time that happened to me). On top of that, the door to the room isn't even a solid door. It's the same type of flimsy, hollow door that one would use in a bathroom or bedroom in one's home, and you don't even get a key to the dead bolt, so when you leave the room, the only lock keeping your room and belongings secure is the one that's built into the door handle. It's no more secure than when you lock your bathroom door at home.
The second time I stayed there, the lock didn't even work. I had a room with two doors. One only had the door handle lock, nothing else. The other door had the door handle lock, a dead bolt, and a "bar" lock. Bear in mind, you don't get a key for the dead bolt, and the bar lock can only be locked from the inside, so that only leaves you with the door handle lock when you leave your room. I locked that lock when I left for the evening. When I came back to the room, the door popped open when I grabbed the door handle. Even though the lock mechanism had locked, the bolt wouldn't mate properly with the door frame, so all one had to do to open my door the whole time I was gone was to push the door open. On top of that, there was no shampoo in the room. I called the front desk, and asked for some. They said they would bring some up, but never did. I went down to the front desk after about a half hour, and they told me that the hotel was out of shampoo. Also, there was no way to control the heat in the room other than by opening the window. The radiators have no temperature adjustment, so I had to control the temperature by sleeping with the windows open to various degrees in December, and adjust the temperature throughout the night by waking up and opening or closing the windows. Come to think of it, that's probably why I have a cold, right now. I would also caution against staying at the Milner in the summer. It doesn't appear to have any air conditioning, and summers in Detroit can get hot and muggy. Oh, and the stale cereal that my companion was compelled to spit out at breakfast was only appreciated for its comic value.
It's bizarre that this hotel charges the same rates as a clean, modern, safe hotel, but can't even provide the basic level of quality that one would find at a Motel 6. The weekend rate was about $100 per night. I have stayed in some dives in my life, but this really is the worst dump I've ever stayed in.
I will say that the staff is friendly, and the location is very good, but that's all the place has going for it.
I only stay here one night at a time as a place to crash if I go downtown for an event, so I can have a few drinks and not worry about having to drive home to the suburbs. That means that I don't have to shower there, because I can drive home in the morning to get cleaned up, which is nice. If not for its proximity to stadiums, concert venues, bars, and restaurants and our stringent drunk-driving laws, this hotel would probably be another one of Detroit's abandoned buildings.
