San Diego - 500 West
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/10/11
- highly unfriendly and rude staff - toilets filthy and nasty - I thought this was a HOTEL, but it is a HOSTEL - beds are soooo bad - it is loud, people are obnoxious and the lights are on shinning into the room. with noises and light impossible to sleep - the only nice thing is the friendly security guard

Ignore the Website descriptions !
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/17/10
IGNORE the website pictures, and descriptions !!!! I was seriously upset with staff, I checked in, with a PRINTED RESERVATION - booked 8 months in advance... saying DOUBLE DELUXE "WITH A WC". On being shown the room, it was a SINGLE bed, basic sparse (OK granted very clean) - and NO ensuite or TOILET. When I went back down to the lobby to query this, I said - my booking says "with a WC" and I was expecting a DOUBLE BED. First the staff denied they understood what "with a WC" meant. I said everyone in Europe the world understands that means with a toilet. They said "Americans don't know what "with a WC" means" - I responded, you don't know what you own website is saying on a booking confirmation ?!?! They blamed the website being incorrect. They then said all the double rooms were booked and only singles were left, anyway as a single traveler, that surely is OK "isn't it"?! that wasn't the point....the attitude sucked, there was no apology, and no offer of a refund. Where's that famous American service with a smile ?! ALL the SINGLE rooms are on the "outside" meaning the MAIN road - meaning NO DOUBLE GLAZING, and therefore noisy as hell. You need ear plugs, unless you sleep deep. But all the DOUBLE rooms (I had chance to glance in one of two when they were being cleaned in the morning) were on the INSIDE of the hotel, no noise !! Terrible acoustics with guests slamming doors all night and morning... you need to be drunk or on sleeping pills to blot out noise. OK, tell me hostels don't have own toilets, most don't. But having just come from a hostel on the beach with a private bathroom (paid extra) and double bed, I kind of expected the same thing. HAD I paid A LOT less $$ and "hostel" rates, I would not complain, far from it, the room was cleaned each day. Do NOT think you are booking into the 500 Hotel part, when in fact its really the HOSTEL part. If you are looking for value for money, then book at the LOWEST rate you can, and not the "Hotel rate" selling you a "deluxe double room" because you probably won't get it, and it will look NOTHING LIKE THE PHOTOS of a girl on a double bed.... be warned.

This place was FINE
By Cortez, 8/15/10
I read the reviews here when i decided to visit this place during the summer. I was prepared to do battle with a rude staff and a bed bugs, but what I found was a pleasant surprise. Let me start by saying this place is no the Four Seasons. It's an old hotel in a historic building that has a rustic feeling to it. There is a YMCA in the basement and a restaurant on the first floor. The fairs are low, the rooms are small. When I checked in I asked the staff about bed bugs, they assured me that is not a common occurrence at the hotel. I checked my bed for bugs the minute I got in and event sleped in my clothes the first night but soon realized THERE WERE NO BED BUGS. Yes, there are no bathroom in your room. But everyone staying in the hotel has access to the 8-12 bathrooms on each floor. The bathrooms are not locker/gym style, meaning each person with a key can open their bathroom. Once your inside the bathroom, its locked and no one can come in. You have a shower, a sink, and a toilet. So it's not like your SHARING. I did not see tons of homeless people walking around. The hotel is in very good location next to the street car station. There is also a bus stop in front of the hotel that goes straight to the airport. Sure, if I had the money I would have stayed at the more upscale hotels that charged $200 a night. This place was a bit bare bones but I just needed a place to rest my head at night and it suited me perfectly. I wouldn't recommend staying in this hotel if you're on a honeymoon. But if your young, like to travel cheap, and up for some fun I say why not give this place a shot?

Cheap and Convenient!
By James,, 8/5/10
The earlier reviewers complaining about no towels -- you do know you could just call up the desk clerk and have them sent up, right? Dumb. Anyway, the best thing about 500 West is the short one block walking distance to the trolleys to go to connections to the convention center, harbor blvd. and even the San Diego Zoo. I was there for the comic convention and found it very convenient to come and go. The elevators are a bit rickety but workable. The rooms are small but you should have known that before you reserved a room. This is a European style hostel -- hostels share bathrooms and showers. I knew all this going in and was actually surprised about how well maintained the whole place was. Don't listen to the whiney reviews -- be able to communicate to the desk clerks, ensure they understand you and all will be well. I did enjoy the option of having luggage locked up after you check out. Be sure to keep your tag! Recommended.

Don't go, save yourself a misery!!!
By Su, 9/22/09
Too many to list. Tiny room, with no towels or hand soaps in bathrooms in addition, I got charged extra night that I didn't stay after checking out on-time. It's not worth your $$. I wanted to give no star, but I guess the worst score is the one star here! Oh, did I mention the filthy bathroom and service?

Great value. I will recommend to friends
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/17/09
The 500 West is located near the San Diego Convention Center which allowed me to stay there and walk to the conference at the convention center. I was able to extend my stay to enjoy the city with the money I saved. The bathrooms are detached from the rooms but private, and I was always able to find a clean one without a problem. The hotel is very clean and the staff friendly and helpful.

Horrible experience - found a roach on my luggage
By 91354, 5/18/09
i stayed at 500 west on 5/1 - 5/3/09 in room 308. During my stay i observed the following: stained carpets, stained walls, dirty showers, dirty & overflowing toilets, bathrooms without any towels to dry hands after washing, and a horrible dumpster smell. Further, on 5/3/09 i woke up & noticed a roach crawling on my suitcase which was approx. 6 inches away from my face. I called the front desk and they did not help me - my roommate killed the roach. I can no longer use that suitcase for fear of it contaminating my home with roach eggs. I left my cell # for the manager to call me re: my concerns and he never called. When i contacted the management on 5/4/09 the manager was sarcastic, nasty, and insinuated that i was lying. He began laughing at me and it made me very upset. He refused to grant my request for a refund.

Perfect one night layover hotel.
By Chakku Norisu, 9/10/08
This hotel... well you get what you pay for. It is in the middle of downtown a stone throw from the amtrak and rail station. Five minutes to the airport. The bathrooms are yes down the hall but the maids are always around and inspecting them routinly. The room is no bigger than a jail cell, but they have excelent high speed internet. In sum. Great location, perfect one night stop or for the penny pencher or those on a very tight budget.

Great service, great location
By Laurel, 3/25/08
This hotel is right in the middle of everything. I went to San Diego for a conference but couldn't afford the conference hotel at $200/night on my grad student budget. This hotel is actually better located than the conference hotel - an easy walk to downtown and the Gaslight District, Little Italy, the boardwalk along the water, and buses, trains and the trolley. My room was simple, but clean. They provided fresh towels every day and the bathrooms were always clean. The building is an old YMCA or something like that and, although clearly old, has some pretty cool architecture and is nicely arranged. The amazing thing though was the service. Every staff person was helpful and made it very easy for me to find my way around the city (and to find some really good inexpensive food as well). I have never stayed in a hotel in which the staff were as nice or as concerned about my stay. I am not only talking about the front desk staff, also the housekeeping staff, maintenance staff, and restaurant staff. You can probably tell by the length of this review that I was absolutely amazed. My only hesitation about staying here would be that there doesn't seem to be air conditioning in the rooms (fine now, but perhaps too warm in summer?) and that you aren't as insulated from noise as in more expensive hotels (you can hear noises from the hall in the rooms, as well as doors closing - the weekend I was there, people were quiet, but it would be bad with a loud group there). Overall though this was a great way to be right in the middle of San Diego at a really affordable price.

Dorm-style hotel, can't beat the price
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/1/08
If you're willing to go down the hall to use the bathroom or take a shower, you cannot go wrong with the 500 West. Those looking to save money will find it a perfectly pleasant, safe hotel that's near everything, for a fraction of the price. It's like a European hostel or dorm, in which you have a bed, wardrobe and desk with TV in your room, and then you have shared bathrooms. I never had to wait for a bathroom or shower. They were all clean, and I appreciated the coin-operated laundry on the top floor. I could walk two blocks to the train, which would take me in two minutes to the Gaslamp district or the convention center. You can walk to waterfront restaurants, dinner cruises, and even the Gaslamp district. Centrally located, it's the best deal around. There's a convenience store around the back and down the block, if you get the late-night munchies. I ran into a few guests who were not made aware of the format of the hotel before they got there, so they were wierded-out a little bit, and disappointed. But when you're paying $69 per night and everyone else in town is paying $275, you have to expect that there's going to be a reason. I was there on business and looking to save money with a clean, safe place to sleep, and that's what I got. Families looking to do San Diego on a dime will also love it. I will definitely go back again.
