Don't go, save yourself a misery!!!
By Boo, 09/22/09
Too many to list. Tiny room, with no towels or hand soaps in bathrooms in addition, I got charged extra night that I didn't stay after checking out on-time. It's not worth your $$. I wanted to give no star, but I guess the worst score is the one star here! Oh, did I mention the filthy bathroom and service?

Great value. I will recommend to friends
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/17/09
The 500 West is located near the San Diego Convention Center which allowed me to stay there and walk to the conference at the convention center. I was able to extend my stay to enjoy the city with the money I saved. The bathrooms are detached from the rooms but private, and I was always able to find a clean one without a problem. The hotel is very clean and the staff friendly and helpful.

Horrible experience - found a roach on my luggage
By 91354, 05/18/09
I STAYED AT 500 WEST ON 5/1 - 5/3/09 IN ROOM 308. DURING MY STAY I OBSERVED THE FOLLOWING: STAINED CARPETS, STAINED WALLS, DIRTY SHOWERS, DIRTY & OVERFLOWING TOILETS, BATHROOMS WITHOUT ANY TOWELS TO DRY HANDS AFTER WASHING, AND A HORRIBLE DUMPSTER SMELL. FURTHER, ON 5/3/09 I WOKE UP & NOTICED A ROACH CRAWLING ON MY SUITCASE WHICH WAS APPROX. 6 INCHES AWAY FROM MY FACE. I CALLED THE FRONT DESK AND THEY DID NOT HELP ME - MY ROOMMATE KILLED THE ROACH. I CAN NO LONGER USE THAT SUITCASE FOR FEAR OF IT CONTAMINATING MY HOME WITH ROACH EGGS. I LEFT MY CELL # FOR THE MANAGER TO CALL ME RE: MY CONCERNS AND HE NEVER CALLED. WHEN I CONTACTED THE MANAGEMENT ON 5/4/09 THE MANAGER WAS SARCASTIC, NASTY, AND INSINUATED THAT I WAS LYING. HE BEGAN LAUGHING AT ME AND IT MADE ME VERY UPSET. HE REFUSED TO GRANT MY REQUEST FOR A REFUND.

Perfect one night layover hotel.
By Dark Helmet, 09/10/08
This hotel... well you get what you pay for. It is in the middle of downtown a stone throw from the amtrak and rail station. Five minutes to the airport. The bathrooms are yes down the hall but the maids are always around and inspecting them routinly. The room is no bigger than a jail cell, but they have excelent high speed internet. In sum. Great location, perfect one night stop or for the penny pencher or those on a very tight budget.

Great service, great location
By Laurel, 03/25/08
This hotel is right in the middle of everything. I went to San Diego for a conference but couldn't afford the conference hotel at $200/night on my grad student budget. This hotel is actually better located than the conference hotel - an easy walk to downtown and the Gaslight District, Little Italy, the boardwalk along the water, and buses, trains and the trolley. My room was simple, but clean. They provided fresh towels every day and the bathrooms were always clean. The building is an old YMCA or something like that and, although clearly old, has some pretty cool architecture and is nicely arranged. The amazing thing though was the service. Every staff person was helpful and made it very easy for me to find my way around the city (and to find some really good inexpensive food as well). I have never stayed in a hotel in which the staff were as nice or as concerned about my stay. I am not only talking about the front desk staff, also the housekeeping staff, maintenance staff, and restaurant staff. You can probably tell by the length of this review that I was absolutely amazed. My only hesitation about staying here would be that there doesn't seem to be air conditioning in the rooms (fine now, but perhaps too warm in summer?) and that you aren't as insulated from noise as in more expensive hotels (you can hear noises from the hall in the rooms, as well as doors closing - the weekend I was there, people were quiet, but it would be bad with a loud group there). Overall though this was a great way to be right in the middle of San Diego at a really affordable price.

Dorm-style hotel, can't beat the price
By lwoody, 02/01/08
If you're willing to go down the hall to use the bathroom or take a shower, you cannot go wrong with the 500 West. Those looking to save money will find it a perfectly pleasant, safe hotel that's near everything, for a fraction of the price. It's like a European hostel or dorm, in which you have a bed, wardrobe and desk with TV in your room, and then you have shared bathrooms. I never had to wait for a bathroom or shower. They were all clean, and I appreciated the coin-operated laundry on the top floor. I could walk two blocks to the train, which would take me in two minutes to the Gaslamp district or the convention center. You can walk to waterfront restaurants, dinner cruises, and even the Gaslamp district. Centrally located, it's the best deal around. There's a convenience store around the back and down the block, if you get the late-night munchies. I ran into a few guests who were not made aware of the format of the hotel before they got there, so they were wierded-out a little bit, and disappointed. But when you're paying $69 per night and everyone else in town is paying $275, you have to expect that there's going to be a reason. I was there on business and looking to save money with a clean, safe place to sleep, and that's what I got. Families looking to do San Diego on a dime will also love it. I will definitely go back again.

The best value in San Diego
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/26/07
I was definitely nervous after reading some reviews. Had booked here & Hostelling International in Market St - chose this because of restaurant & glad I did! When I checked out HI it was way inferior. Good omen from quiet, safe & clean steps & entrance even at midnight, welcoming lobby with beautiful Christmas tree, awesome marble fireplace, elegant nook with 4 computers plus gym. Weather very cold, my room warm, lots of cosy bed coverings. Next day I got a fridge within 15 minutes of asking - someone seemed to be cleaning 24/7 so toilets/bathrooms always clean & well stocked - great system with digital locks. Tiny room with an unlovely inside view so I kept blinds down (I asked for a quiet room), carpet stained - cool flat screen TV with lots of channels. All perfect for 4 nights @ $49 a night - restaurant did awesome breakfasts - sit at the bar for fast service - all lovingly restored. Elevators scruffy but who cares? they work. Historic Amtrak station next door photo-worthy, plus trolley station. I highly recommend this place – for me this was in fact better than a hotel as I met such interesting people from all over the world.. SG

It´s an ok hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/04/07
The rooms are tiny and my window didn't open well. It was also noisy during the night and with my jetlag it was hard to sleep. The good thing is that it's very cheap, well located and I felt safe there. The towels were changed daily and the shared bathrooms were clean, so if you don't mind sharing the bathrooms, it's a good option. It really looks like a military room, so it's not very comfortable but ok if you just wanna a place to sleep.

you get what you pay for...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/02/07
They should have given more information on the website. Had I known that they did not provide towels I would have packed my own. Be sure to knock on the bathroomdoors first, there was an embarrassing moment early morning because the key opens the lock if you didn't throw the lock inside the door.

Best Deal Downtown
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/09/07
If you are used to traveling around Europe or staying in hostels you will like this place. If you don't mind sharing a bathroom and having a small room, you'll like it too. I was very happy with my experience here. I found everything to be very clean. The price was better than anyplace downtown, and since I was more excited about being at the beach and exploring downtown than being in my room, I didn't mind the small rooms. I had a corner room with two windows which was really nice for the light and the views, but made it a bit noisy. Not from the people inside the hotel, but the streetlife out. If you have a hard time sleeping with noise, this may not be the place for you, although I don't know if it would be better any other place downtown. It could be attributed to the single pane windows, however. The only other thing is that the elevators are old, and thus a little shaky. But if it scares you too much you can take the stairs... The hotel is right in the heart of all the good stuff...close to gaslamp district, little italy, balboa park, the zoo. I had a great time!
