Description

A poetic combination of sol and mar, the Spanish words for sun and sea, Hotel Solamar is a name that captures the allure of its San Diego setting, an area rich with the sun and proximity to the ocean. Hotel Solamar is the epitome of urban coastal chic. The decor, radiating light and warmth, is only eclipsed by the sunny personalities of the staff with their bright smiles and a welcoming spirit. From sunrise to sunset, the goal of the day is fun and ease, even for business travelers, in a setting of style and comfort. As the sun sets, the daylight may fade, but the heat continues well into the evening with a lively and sophisticated scene at LOUNGEsix on Solamar Terrace or coastal California dining at Jsix. From check in to check out, Hotel Solamar is the equivalent of calm waters and sunny skies. The 235 guestrooms and suites provide the perfect space to relax and create with overstuffed chairs, LCD flat screen TV's, opening windows and a fully stocked honor bar. Each room offers welcome amenities, such as Gilchrist and Soames bath products, plush robes, laptop friendly safes and spacious work areas with ergonomic chairs. Adjacent to the hotel guests will be enticed by Jsix Restaurant featuring Executive Chef Christian Graves enlightened menu serving Coastal Cuisine guided by the principles of sustainability and inspired by California farms and the regions coastline. Always a pleasure
By Betty, 6/22/11
I love the Solamar for so many reasons: the location is fantastic, the staff is great, and the rooms are comfortable and chic. They offer a complimentary wine social/happy hour in the 'living room' (lobby) in the evenings featuring local wines. They also are very pet friendly, placing water bowls outside with a board announcing the arrival of "very important pooches". Yes, hotel parking is expensive at $25 per day, but it's standard in the area. Kimpton Hotels are very environmentally conscious and have been utilizing 'green' practices long before it was cool. They also support local and global environmental organizations in both their hotels and their products offered for sale.

Great Experience
By Smitty, 8/11/09
Very stylish! First, we got a good rate through hotwire. The service was excellent as we pulled up from the valet and front desk as we checked in. valet was $35 a night which isn't too bad considerering downtown with limited parking. The rooms were very clean and free wi fi helped out a lot. The location is the best, we attended the Padres game 2 blocks away. The gaslamp is full of great bars and resturants. Overall, a great property!

Outstanding service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/16/07
We stayed at the Solamar for four days in December 2007. The staff was outstanding and very friendly. When we had a minor problem, they went out of their way to solve the problem. The free wine service each evening is a nice touch. The rooms are very nice and we appreciated the free wifi service. We would definitely stay here on our next visit to San Diego. The location is very convenient to the Convention Center and the Gas Light District.

Trendy
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/1/07
This hotel was nothing like I have ever seen. The decor was nice..just different. It was hard to sleep in a room that had polka dots and patterns everywhere. I had a very small room, but the room next to me was very big with a huge bathroom-same price. Dont really know why. The animal print robes were really cool!

Great Property!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/1/07
This is a beautiful boutique hotel, right across from PetCo Park with the most beautiful bar overlooking the Gaslamp! The rooms are large and comfortable. This is the only place we will stay in San Diego!

Great service and value, this place ROCKS!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/8/07
I just completed a 2 night stay at the Solomar and couldn't be happier! I'll start with the staff. I can't believe that the previous poster and I actually stayed at the same Hotel Solamar as our experiences seem to be polar opposites. They were all very friendly, helpful and actually seemed to take pride in their jobs! This started the moment we exited our cab (Even though we arrived prior to 8:00 A.M., check in is at 3:00 P.M.) with the doorman and continued with EVERY employee we encountered for the duration of our stay. The people at the front desk were all very friendly and helpful with local info. When I requested a coffee maker from housekeeping it arrived at our door (With a smile) in about 5 minutes. The rooms decor was very relaxing and had everything I needed from internet access to one of the most comfortable beds I've ever had in a hotel. In fact, it was comfortable to the point that I'll be replacing my own bed within the month. The linens were all of superior quality and seemed to be almost new. In the cleanliness department the only fault I could find would be the windows (This is nit picking as I have been told it had recently rained), other than that the place was immaculate to the point that there weren't even any watermarks in the tub, sink or on any of the fixtures. The other 2 things I'd like to cover is the location (PERFECT!!) and the construction noise. In short, there wasn't any even though there were 3 active construction sites visible within a couple of blocks of my room (520). When I had the window closed the outside world just seemed to disappear. I will definitively be visiting this property again.

Poor Service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/1/07
Like another poster, we also experienced very poor service. Hotel Solomar gave the impression of being all style and no substance. Experienced business travelers, we were ignored or treated with indifference by front desk and bell staff. (Quite a contrast to the Omni in Boston where we stayed the week before - outstanding customer service and front desk staff!). While a fairly new hotel, surfaces were already in need of repair. The Hotel Solomar staff seems more interested in servicing the pseudo-trendies who frequent the rooftop bar (mostly non-guests). For the money, you can do much better in San Diego.

Had a Great Time!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/12/06
Likes...location to Petco field, service, rooms, fitness area just ok. Dislikes...out skirts of a bad area. There was trouble two of the four nights after 11:00 PM...not with us, but more the neighborhood. After all of that I would not hesitate to return to this hotel. Not run of the mill and that made it nice.

By Gail, 10/1/05
I liked everything! It was comfortable, warm and hip and the location was superb! BRAVO! In my opinion this hotel comes in 2nd only to the Omni. You will be pleased with every detail this hotel has to offer.

Great Hotel in a Great Location
By Scott, 8/2/05
I was very imressed with this hotel. It was very clean and service was great. The rooms were very large and the beds very comfy. Flat screen TV,s in the rooms and large showers. Very nice pool on the 4th floor with a full service bar that stays open late. So you can go for that late night swim with a coctail. The location is right next to Petco Park. You can walk to the stadium. Also, there are many great bars in the area.
