Fiesole - A hidden jewel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/16/04
When I lived in Florence and I studied abroad, I used to visit Fiesole every 2 weeks. Fiesole sits on top of a mountain just 5 minutes above from entering Florence. It's a BEAUTIFUL sight to see in the morning and when the sun goes down. From Fiesole, you would take the #7 bus, if I remember correctly, to go down into the city and then change to buses #17 and #10 to get into the downtown part of Firenze. If traveling by car, to get up and down the mountain, there is a scenic winding road to drive. Even though Fiesole may not be in the heart of the city, you get to be close to the city's Stadium where every other Sunday (in the fall), there is a soccer game (big in Italy) and the roar of the crowd just echoes in that part of the city. (I lived 8 blocks from the stadium on Via della Piazzola). I took my fiance there when he came to propose to me and had an espresso at the little restaurant as soon as you get off the bus. This town is considered a day trip when you want to escape Florence (Firenze). Tuscany is like no other Euorpean area that I know, and it's always nice and exciting to explore little towns, including Montepulciano, Montalcino, Lucca, and San Gimignano as well as Fiesole. You make the magic on your trips and if visiting big cities is your plan, then please make a side trip on a day off in Florence to visit Fiesole. I promise, you won't regret it.
