Nice Resort. GREAT Golf Course.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/19/10
Was very reasonably priced. Rooms were clean, food was good. Golf course was excellent. Immaculate condition.. However that being said.. The distance from Coba to the beach is easily a 15 min walk. There are golf cart shuttles that come by often to take you over to the beach. That is if the exhaust fumes don't kill you on the way over. Over all I was very pleased with this resort.

Good Place, Good Friends, Good Times!
By Barb A, 1/30/09
We had been to the Moon Palace 2 yrs. ago which was wonderful, but this time we found overpriced. Took a stab in the dark for a good place at a better price. Opted for Coba, and were not at all dissapointed! Biggest drawback was 1 3/4 hr. from airport on arrival, but the rest of the week made up for it! Everything that we could possibly want was in walking distance, and if you chose to go to the other end of the sister resorts, there were always little trolleys coming and going. If you have a problem just let them know, and they will get you a "limo" at any of the lobbys. That was your own personal chauf feered golf cart. We mostly relaxed, usually in the pool area, but also visited the beach a few times too. Beach was very crowded 10-2, but before or after that more relaxing. Had some buffets and the larger ones offer more choices than the smaller. I would recommend those. Used our 4 reservations at Italian, Seafood, Mediterranean and French restaraunts. I was a little disappointed in the seafood one, but the others were WONDERFUL! Get your reservations early to get the ones you want. Just stop by the front desk at your lobby, and they will take care of all of it for you. Sevice was friendly and prompt. Anything that you need, just ask, and it is there pronto. Our room was very nice, and centrally located, but never to busy or noisy. The grounds were quite beautiful and well maintained, Paradise for a week, and wish that we never had to leave. We had a great time and met many wonderful people. It made that bus ride worth the $700 per person we saved!! We would rate this a 4 1/2! Good valu. good deal

Exceptional Family Vacation
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/11/08
This resort is beautiful and has everything you need! We vacationed at this resort with another family for a total of 4 adults and 4 children, ages 3-9. We couldn't have asked for a better setup. Our room/building was steps away from both the beach and pool. The pools are awesome and so is the beach, although the sand in the water is a bit rocky. There were so many restaurants to chose from between the three resorts, and the transportation between each was very easy. The buffets were the easiest with the kids, as the food was already prepared and the selection was awesome. The kids (all boys!)were so easy to please here and the adults always felt relaxed (is this a dream come true or what?). The rooms were pretty nice and very clean. This is an awesome choice with or without kids. There is plenty of adult entertainment too, such as nightly shows, adults only pools, and a great spa! If you want a beautiful place to relax and be pampered without having to leave the resort, this is definitely for you. We STRONGLY recommend it to all our friends and are planning another vacation there this year to include a third family!

2 star food at 4 star prices
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/15/08
We stayed over New Year at the GBP Akumel. This is my 5th trip to similar resorts in Mexico, Jamaica, DR, etc. First I will highlight the positives of the hotel : - the resort is beautiful with nice clean rooms and great landscaping set on a beautiful, yet rocky (bring water shoes) beach - the lobbies, poQols, etc were very nice and the service at the bars and check in desk was great on the negative side : - THE BIG NEGATIVE : the food. - the buffet had a huge selection of the SAME food every lunch and dinner every day. The selection was so large that most of the food had been sitting a long time yet most of the popular and fresher dishes were empty a lot of the time. When the food was fresh it was good but lunch and dinner every day with virtually the same spread was tiring. The funny thing was they had the nerve to post today's "theme" outside the buffet every day! - the service at the buffet not good. Almost every meal we had to sit at a dirty table and wait 5-15 minutes to have it reset. Often we would be done our meal before being offered a coffee or drink. - After 3 days of the same buffet meals we were really looking forward to our a la carte meals! They took one a la carte offering away since they said there would be a special New Years Buffet that counted as an a la carte. This was a far superior buffet and if you looked hard enough you could even find lobster tails that the cook was hiding behind the counter. Our first a la carte was at the gourmet restaurant. The food was good but the restaurant was situated facing a glass wall overlooking the buffet! I really didn't need that and though my dinner wasn't as hot as it should have been it was good. The next dinner was at the Steak House where they had an appetizer buffet to start (we just couldn't get away from the buffet!). I ordered a porterhouse which came and was so thin that is was barely even cooked so that it could be medium rare. Others had the filet mignon which seemed much better. A big disappointment for a steak house for sure. - The 24 hour snack bar had really bad food as well. Chicken nuggets were very low quality fatty dark meat, the nachos were chips with watery processed cheese and nothing else, the burgers were edible though if you're really stuck. They were out of condiments, salads, fresh salsa, etc. pretty much all the time except for the peak lunch time. - The shows didn't appear on the days that they were supposed to due to New Years so we missed the shows we wanted but the quality of the shows we did see was very low. We had 2 pre-teen girls whose highlight of previous trips was the shows and they were very disappointed. On the plus side (not suprisingly) it was no problem getting good seats for these shows! - There were many small problems with the room like the phone didn't ring, the sliding door didn't lock, the tub drain was broken, the TV converter didn't work but these were all fixed quickly when we pointed out these problems. I would not go back based on the food and shows and several people we spoke to at the resort felt the same way and that is too bad because the rest of the resort was beautiful. If we had paid for 2 star meals I would have been really happy with the place.

It Was Amazing
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/3/08
The Grand Bahia Principe Akumal is an all inclusive resort hotel and it is fantastic. It has two sister hotels in the area and they all are acceptionally nice and fun to live in. Each resort has their own pools and all together have a massive ammount of beach space. There are many bars and refreshment stands located all around the premises and are sponsored by Coka Cola. The car ride from the Cancun airport can be a nucense but once you see the hotel lobby you instantly know that you have come to the right place. Every single staff member of the hotel has a good personality and is nice to everybody that treats them nicely. They are very funny and have a good sense of humor. The food is decent and I found that the food in the buffet got boring after a while, so I suggest that visitors book a reservation for the different resturants. For me (a 15 year old) it got boring after 10:30p.m there was nothing that would be going on and everything but the 24 hour snack bar would be open. I was too young to have a colored band which would allow me to get into the "discoteca" and i was too old for the kids activities and to go to bed at 10 p.m. I would suggest that people who have kids my age should bring one of their friends, and they would have a better time. Im not going to complain because i had a wonderful time, and at night i would sit on the beach and watch the stars on the beautiful beach of mexico, and wait for my brother to get back from the discotec. I will defenitly be going back next year!

Best in the area...
By T, 6/21/07
This place is awesome, you get 3 treats in one, Tulum, Akumal, & Coba. You never get board with having this many resorts always something to do. Everything is so clean and Beautifully well kept. for sure wear swim shoes the coral hurts. There is some topless sunbathing at the beach. All the staff was very friendly, food was pretty good. I Loved the beach bar with the swing's for seat's, that was cool. Use the collecto's(white vans)outside the resort(front entrance) for traveling, Alot cheaper!!!! Shop at Playa Del Carmen, other then Hacienda, again alot cheaper! Enjoy GREAT place!!!!!!!!!!!!

fantastic place
By Carl, 6/1/07
I loved pretty much everything about GBP Akumal except for the bus ride from and to the airport. we had to leave 5 hours early going back to the airport and it took us over 2 hours to get there. everything else- food- fantastic, loved the buffet as well as the al-a-cart resturants, my favorite was the Arlequin but all were good. service- incredibly good!! the folks here are so nice its almost like they are not real people..lol I especially liked Angel the bartender at the swing bar.. he was awesome and could not have been any friendlier. room- very spacious and very clean, had a new towel animal on our bed every day and the mini bar was restocked each day as well. The beds are hard but I slept like a baby every night, could have been the sun that helped a bit...lol beaches- I would sugest water shoes because part of the beach is rocky but its still very nice, I had no problem getting a palpula to sit under no matter what time I went down. pools- very clean and refreshing, the pool bar is a blast! Comment- folks, tipping is not a city in China... I sat at the swing bar one day for about 5 hours and not one person tipped Angel a single dollar. remember these folks dont make allot of money so any tips you give them are very much appreciated. I am already booked to go back this year!!

going back again (2 weeks this time)
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/26/07
This resort is so beautiful...We visited in april 06 and stayed at the Akumal side, our room was in the back (coba section now, building 7) we were in a group of about 14, and were scattered around in this area, about 2 couples per building which was fine, we had no problems with that, your so close to each other any way, and ya just pick them all up along the way (bar :-)... I was never snorkling before and tryed it here..well the fish and colours you can see just wading in the water 15 feet off shore is great, I could spend all day out there. Shopping in Playa del carmen was great as well. If you are into Harley Davidson's or have family or friends into them, there is an Authorized Harley Clothes shop in Playa Del Carmen. We purchased our harley shirts and sweaters there, with the Playa Del Carmen, Mexico on the back... wonderful colours and designs... Food is great, drinks are awesome, try there Mudslides..yum.. Service was top notch. We went Xel Ha. what a great day, worth the money, beautiful water and snorkling... We loved traveling around the resort on the trains, drivers festive and funny... going up to the Hacienda in the evening is great, shopping, drinking and people meeting... This resort is huge, takes time to see it all, there are so many places to go... Playa Del Carmen now has a Walmart....wow.. We are going this time Mar 07 for 2 weeks, 1 week is just not enough time for this area of Mexico and the resort.....

Cultural Experience
By Jenna J, 9/5/06
I hated the heat. It was about 90' with 70% humidity. Sticky! The water is beautiful. Get bananas from the dining rooms early in morning and feed the fish by the docks on the beach. Watch out for tarantulas. Tip well! One dollar is 1/4 of what they make in a day at the hotel. Don't buy anything on any tour routes or at the hotel. They charge the same if not more than the US for items. The rooms are very comfortable with high vaulted ceilings, fans, classy bathrooms, and a fridge stocked daily with soda, beer, water, chips, and candy bars. Lastly, learn Spanish. The whole week I was there I only bumped into two couples from the US. Akumal has the better pool but Tulum has more people speaking english. Oh! Use your dinner reservations!
