At least the bar was cool!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/1/11
although, as everyone knows, the Bergmann is a roach motel, and other than the price there is no reason to stay there, the bar is excellent and has the largest scotch selection in all of Juneau (no kidding) and the bartender that was there, i believe his name was Shane, was one of the best we have encountered in our travels! i would recommend the bar to anyone in Juneau looking to actually see some History, and the hotel to anyone who REALLY needs a cheap room!

The New Jersey of Juneau
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/8/10
We arrived there after getting off the ferry for a one night stay because our other reservation for a different hotel had fallen through the cracks. Once we got into our room, we were no less than disasatisfied. When placing a small bag on the bed side table, it fell apart. Yep, the table fell apart under the massive 3 pound weight of our bag crushed the table. After having walked around town for a while and meeting some of the locals, we came to the conclusion that the Bergman is seen as a haven for "Junkies and deviants". We discarded this thought giving the place a chance until the next morning. This is when I dropped a couple of rolls of film out of my bag and they fell behind a small cabinet. Pulled the cabinet out to retrieve them, and found not one, not two, but an open bag of 50 bulk insulin needles. Something is telling me they weren't there from a Diabetic. The room was quite "Pungent", door didn't work all that well, and the people that inhabit the place are something straight from "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest". Overall, I would gladly sleep outside before this place again. Make sure your vaccines are up to date. This is all coming from somebody that lived in a mud hut, in a war torn third world country for more than a year, and at one time went 32 days without showering.

Save you Money, Buy a tent at WalMart
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/10/10
Good people BEWARE We originally heard of this place from some friends who stayed there three years ago. They said it was a "pretty nice place" and that the managment "went out of thie way to arrange things for them". So, we made reservations and paid in advance but when we arrived not only was there no one at the desk but when after repeated calls on the house phone, when someone did show up, he could not find our reservations or any record of our payment (the individual seemed intoxicated and had difficulty operating the office computer. finally He just gave us a room key (not offering to assist us with our bags) and said "he'd deal with it later". When we found our room it was terrible. it smelt like an ashtray, the sink was stained and cracked, every surface seemed to have a cigarette burn on it the curtains looked like they were hanging by one or two hooks and THER WAS A USED CONDOM clinging to the side of the wastebasket along with whatever other filth. We went to check out but again there was no one at the desk and after another half an hour without assistance ( durring which time two very intoxicated men cam in and pestered us for "spare change" Then we finall left and went to another hotel. All our attempts to obtain a refund have been ignored and the Better Bussiness Bureau has informed us that they have had numerous complaints about this place. Save your money, Go to WalMart and buy a teny

WARNING,WARNING, ESPECIALLY ELDERLY TRAVELERS!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/21/10
This place has a solid reputation.....with the police. This is NOT a hotel for travelers.. Beware the unsuspecting who happen to see and believe the ad in the Juneau Travel and Planning Guide which has the audacity to allow this ghetto to be advertised as a 'gem' with all the modern conveniences and having the 'charm of european style rooms' If you enjoy hard core drunks, addicts, loose women and, degenerates and loud loose mouths at all hours, cops (seems the 'regulars' are either going to,just got out of or are trying to avoid jail/prison)- and ambulances hauling off the (a) drunks (b) addicts (c) mentally ill,(d) probation or parole violators et al hey, this might be the place for you. You may also enjoy the dissolving floors and mold in the bathrooms and showers(you want HOT water? Not.) the dryers that don't work-$12.00 will get you damp with a touch or residual something smoke, disgusting microwaves with baked on, I don't know...... Fluffy, and descending floors you can just ride on down during an earthquake-appointments to the rooms include filthy carpets, matching stains and cigerette burns and an assortment of different colored hairs in their glorious textures on the sheets and blankets, scented with 100 years of stale booze, cigerettes, mold and the...,who knows occassional rotting corpse (?)-an olfactory treat for sure, and various broken window views of 'the trash that lies beneath' There is no complimentary anything,no soap,or water glass at the chipped sink, the latest in stolen towels, no private bathrooms, and if you're lucky there might be tp in the shared bathrooms to wipe your a........ctually,better bring your own.Daily room housekeeping? Comp coffee? Oh go on I love a sense of humour!!!Did I mention the bar? At one side or back of the building take your pick- there is a bar- where the rude, crude, and lewd gather to smoke..outside and carry on LOUD conversation from midnight on caring not about anyone wanting to SLEEP-but does anyone check in here to 'sleep'?So if you're not dealing with the ' inmates' sorry 'guests' at night with their grotesque cacaphony of screaming f... n s... snorts, grunts, hacking up ......... (let your imagination soar) demonic gibberish, and ooh-la-la,you're contending with the neanderthals below--dude. Did I mention the place is haunted (?) the 'spirits' around the bar area however are well behaved for the most part-they don't have to go to hell they're already here. It's a sham uh shame because this place does have history and could have been a very clean, decent of historical interest budget hotel if it had been kept up-the owner I'm told is a slum lord and never refunds anyone their money. I'm always up for an adventure but don't Ju....neau I won't ever venture to this dump again, and neither should you.

Better to stay in the street or woods
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/16/10
I have traveled all over the world and learned a simple fact - Sometimes it is better to stay in the street, the alley, or the woods - this is one of them. Talked to a some people that say they are trying to "reinvent" the place - great when you are done let me know - but right now - I will pass. The bar has a great selection of liquor so spend your $50.00 getting really drunk then stagger out into the street and pass out - you will be better off then falling asleep inside the building. Note to hotel staff: The definition of "Historic" is not decaying bio-hazard, nor does it refer to the mattresses and sheets. Fewer immunizations are needed to visit the Congo.

It's still the same old Bergmann
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/15/10
Novices Beware: As long as you know what to expect the Bergmann is about the best you can get for the price in Juneau. Place still smells like an ashtray. There was hot water this time, and heat, but still no towels soap or cups in the rooms. Then there's the beds, the mattresses are broken, sagging, badly stained on both sides and I think that they get their linen second hand from a leper colony in the Sudan (bring sleeping bags, thats what we do.).after the lepers will no longer use it. On the plus side however, there were no bedbugs that I could find, probably because they won't stay there either. There was no toilet paper in any of the bathrooms on our floor. There were people fighting in the halls at 2am and drunks sleeping it off in the hall at 5am with no staff members to be found anywhere. When there was a desk clerk on duty he could not get off the cell phone long enough to listen to what we were trying to say and when he did respond to us he could not do so without using the "F" word at least twice in every sentence. I'll stay there again but I know what I'm grtting for what I'm paying.

Improving
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/29/10
New Staff, painting and cleaning going on. Outside starting to look better. Staff said they are determined to re-invent Her. Didn't hear any drunks or fighting. Slept like a baby. Hotel looks better than the last time.

...The Bergmann
By Justin, 12/21/09
I walked into the Bergmann to play some cards and drink some beers. The "Hotel" is not fit as a roach motel, let alone place for humans to stay. There is mold growing on the inside and outside of the place. The linens that they are using as window covers appear to be bedsheets deemed too dirty for the Bergmann (which is saying a lot). I wish yahoo would let me upload a photo of this place - as it would deter any and all future guests. When in Juneau stay at the Juneau Hotel, or the Prospector. They are the best in town.

Scrummy
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/20/09
This place is like a cross between a Star Wars pub scene and Gaza. I talked to a potential guest that had leprosy but decided against staying there for fear of catching something. The only reason I stayed there is I am Catholic, and as I hate my life and no longer want to live but suicide is forbidden. One nice thing is now that I have had the pleasure of staying at this "historic" hotel, I want to live again.

A great place to stay on your visit to Juneau.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/19/09
This is an historical old miner's hotel in Juneau and has presserved all the characteristics of olden times. I really enjoyed my stay and found the premises clean and the price acceptable.
