Since my initial review seemed to have disappeared, here's my short and bitter-sweet review.
My fiance and I stayed at the establishment a couple of months ago, with no complaint aside from the cigarette smell. I had made reservations for a later date, 09/21/2007 to 09/22/2007, and forgot to cancel the reservation 48 hours in advance. When I checked my credit card account on 09/21/2007, I was billed for the no-show. This change in dates was due to serious health, scheduling and logistical issues. While technically they had the right to charge my credit card $104.98 for a no-show (due to the above issues), I felt that a more mutually amicable solution would be worked out. Especially since we had previously patronized the establishment.
I contacted the manager, 'Becky', and explained the situation. She was firm in the decision to bill my credit card since they had a 'full house' that particular weekend. I then asked to speak to the owner. Becky informed me that he would be gone until Monday the 25th, but that she would have him contact me. The 25th came and went without a phone call. On the 26th, I again contacted the establishment and spoke to a different manager. I asked if the owner was in, which he wasn't. She then informed me that he had left a note saying 'don't issue him a refund'. Due to the complete lack of customer appreciation, I then asked her to inform the owner that I would tell everybody I knew to not patronize the establishment, and that they would in turn tell everybody they new. I also asked her to inform the owner that I would drive to Newport and, in a constitutionally-protected manner, hand out fliers to passerby advising them of the risk of not cancelling a reservation in time.......no matter what the reason. During these exchanges I was polite and civil both in tone and volume.
When I informed her of my intent to hand out fliers, she became very rude and said (words similar) "We have an excellent reputation. We don't need people like you". 'You' meaning a customer who would have otherwise given them more business. I do not believe $104.98 would have caused them to file Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but my fiance and I, on the other hand, aren't exactly in the upper-income tax bracket.
Viking's is located in wonderful Nye Beach. The condo was very comfortable except for the beds. (Unit 104) The mattress on the pull out couch was so bad it felt like you were sleeping on the metal frame. The bed in the bedroom seemed to be very old and had no cushion at all. It was like sleeping on plywood. We advised the desk clerk and were told it was out of their control since the units are owned by private owners. We understand, but shouldn't the owner be advised? We won't ever stay in that unit again and probably won't take the chance on the same experience with the other units.
