The Beachcomber, Port Austin

The price is right but the rooms are from out of the 50's and 60's. O.K., big deal, the bed was fine, the bathroom was fine, the decor was 50's and 60's but good on the whole. The biggest drawback was the mold. There was mold in the walls or somewhere else in the room. By the 3rd day I had a screaming headache and had to leave in the middle of the night it was so bad. If not for the mold I would probably go back even if the motel is from an earlier era of time. You cannot beat the price. That is its biggest advantage. Oh, by the way, there is no internet available there and being a research analyst, I find this a bit bothersome.

The service was awful. When I arrived I found a note with a cell phone number to call. That would be nice except some of us don't have a freakin' cell phone and expect someone to be at the front desk when we arrive at the inconvenient time of 4pm to check in. After coming back over the course of the next 30 minutes I finally get somebody at the front desk--little do I know that this is the way the place is run, not a freak emergency. I check in to a dingy 1960s room with a 1970s sears solid state television and what appears to be a magnetic rather than laser remote control. The bathroom has a shower, not a bathtub. This would have been fine except I had an infant and a toddler--both of which take baths, not showers. So I go back to the front desk to ask for some towels. Nobody there-just a note that says they'll be back in 15 minutes. I come back 20 minutes later and they aren't there yet. After 45 minutes, they show up and give me towels. I go back to the room to try to figure out how to turn a shower into a bath since there is no way to plug the drain. Luckily the shower has a massive hair clog so plugging the drain isn't a problem but I don't really want to give my kids a bath in this so they get their first shower ever (which was interesting in its own right and not particularly relaxing). I can only shower one kid or the shower drain will overflow--yes it is a complete block. I go back to the front desk to see about getting it unclogged and you know what I found (at the inconvenient hour of 7:30pm)? That's right! I note that said they would be back in 15 minutes. So I wait another 45 minutes--which is how long the motel manager/owner's 15 minutes lasts and never see them. My kids have to go to bed and I couldn't wait. The next morning there is still water in the drain...yes this is quite the clog. My wife takes a shower with our other kid and the water rises nearly to the top of the shower. I go back one more time to the front desk at about 7am. No note so I knock on the door. No answer. I knock some more. No answer. At this point I'm not happy and decide to take a shower anyway. I did and it flooded the room. Do I care? No. When I left at 8:30am I had to beat on the door quite a while before being greeted by someone with profound bedhead. I handed her the key and told her I flooded the bathroom because they have a clogged drain that I had been trying to have someone fix since last night. Good times were had by all. My suggestion to the owners and managers is that if they want to go into the service industry, they should be willing to provide a service. The service was the worst I had ever seen anywhere---and I've been in motels in rural 3rd world countries. The location next to the breakwall and park was great and it was an easy stroll downtown.

What a fun place to stay!! The Owners are fun, and as you stay there you become part of the family with all the other guests!! Beautiful location, Fresh Clean Rooms I would recommend the Beachcomber to anybody visiting the Thumb who would like to see beautiful sunsets, be close to downtown and be in a friendly atmosphere!!

the beachcomber motel is in the, seems like, forgotten part of michigan . the motel itself was very satisfing, clean , perfectly located , all the ammities of home , we will be back and so will our friends. we especially like the convience of of the location walking distance from everything in the area there is to enjoy like the farmers market, beach , and harbor, local shopping , just everything could not have been happier

I love the location, within walking distance to all your needs. I get dropped off for a week and just love every minute of it!! The owners are great and the units are well maintained and very clean. I always recommend this place to my friends and relatives. The pier is very close and fun to walk on daily, you can fish or swim or rent skidoos, bikes, kayaks, etc...Fun for the whole family!!
