The very best campground in the Black Hills!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/18/11
Our first visit to the Black Hills since we were kids. Now middle-aged but still kids! Had checked reviews and decided this was the place. It was PERFECT! Staff was friendly and helpful. Campground was spotless. Bathrooms and laundry area very clean ! I am a nurse so notice clean and sanitary. We like the rules and security so we can feel safe and get a good night's rest. Coming from MInnesota with a lot campgrounds and resorts; this one shines as the very best. We will be back!!! Highly recommend Rafter J Bar Ranch. Hill City is 2 miles. Campground offers small store, ice cream and snack bar as well as propane and gasoline. Value for our dollar was excellent!

Nice place, but a little too strict on the rules.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/2/10
Great location and a very nice place. However, the rules on the campfires are too anal. We were trying to adhere to the very early fire-out rule. I was literally 5 minutes past the deadline, filling a water bucket outside the cabin to douse the fire when two guys from the office roared up in a vehicle and rudely told me to put out the fire. I don't even know how they knew the coals were still hot, (they must be on camera!) I don't know if I will be back because of the rude treatment. My family had stayed there for the past 4 years. It's a real nice place, but the office staff has always been a little indifferent. Haven't ever felt really welcome.

We hated to leave!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/24/09
Very neat and clean, close to most major attractions. We especally liked the horsedrawn wagon rides and chuckwagon supper. We have been to others in the Black Hills, but this one has real draft horses and you get to eat in the neat old barn. The people running it were very accomodating.

SWEET
By stacy, 8/20/09
All was awesome. Hot tub/Pool area was perfect. They have tables with umbrellas and lounge chairs pool side. Our site was great we had plenty of space not over crouded. They even cleaned out the fire pits every day. Huge open spaces for the dog to run!!! We will be back...

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/13/09
very nice place but owner and staff treated our group horrible no respect to the fact that we brought in 30 people rented 7 cabins spent lots of money and just wanted to enjoy a week in the hills and let them know in advance we had a large group with multiple families that like to sit around a campfire enjoying one anothers company and a few beers only this campgound has something against fun.

We're going back again!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/18/07
We loved the facility, the central location to all the sights, the view from our cabin, the ammenities (pool, hot tub, game room, trail rides, gift shop, snack bar, etc.). We were so close to all the biggest sights and activities. Best of all, the cabins were clean and inexpensive! I highly recommend it. We'll be going back again this year. Good for any age group.

Too costly for family camping!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/24/06
We found the campground to be very lovely, great location with a great pool area however it was very expensive. Also we did not care for the attitude and disposition of the owners. They need to learn to be FRIENDLY and accomodating to the campers. Too many rules and penalties regarding reservations and making changes. This is not accommodating summer camping with children. Not sure about going back.

No other comes close
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/2/05
It is by far the cleanest and the most well kept campground resort in the Black Hills. We have stayed at Rafter J since the mid 1970,s and we check out the other campgrounds to see if anything comes close, and they dont't. Recommend it highly.
