Pros: Location, location, location. I can't stress this enough. This motel is right in the middle of everything. Everything that you want to go to Old Forge to see or do is within walking distance of this place.
The staff was very friendly and attentive. The room was clean and maid service was outstanding. The pool and lodge/check in was great, clean with plenty of towels.
This isn't the Ritz, if your looking for a 4 star hotel will all the bells and whistles this isn't the right motel for you. The furniture, fixtures are dated and the tv was small. Outside the rooms they have real wood Adirondack furniture. To me this was really charming and added to the whole Old Forge/Adirondack experience.
If your looking motel that's clean with great view, easy walking distance to everything. Then this is the place for you. If your looking for 4 star accommodations and your going to spend most of your time in your room. You may want to look elsewhere.
I for one will be coming back here next year and I would recommend it to my friends.
Considering this is the Adirondacks and there aren't a lot of motel choices, this one isn't bad. The rooms are clean and the decor is well, "Adirondack original". The rooms are quite large, and if you stay down below, you can overlook the lake. While the motel was fairly empty during our stay, they put us in a room right next to other guests so it was noisy at times (dog barking next door). It would have been nice to spread us out a bit since no one was in any of the 5 rooms down from us. There are bears in the area and one came around every morning around 5 and knocked over the garbage can outside our room. Internet access if very limited (main lobby) and I couldn't get on using their password and WEP encryption. The staff was clueless about why it wouldn't work but I suspect they use some other type of encryption, so be forewarned. The pool is not heated and was too cold to swim in (it rained 3 days during our visit). The location is within walking distance to everything in town. Parking is right outside your room. If you're looking for a Marriott, don't come anywhere near the Adirondacks, but if you want a nice relaxing area, this is definitely a place to check out in Old Forge.
I must say after reading reviews left on this site, I was a little nervous. I had booked at a different hotel online. They failed to inform me that they were not available for one of my dates!!! Nice, huh? So I call The Forge 4 days in advance and was able to book a room for $100 per night and was informed the was no air conditioning. Not a big deal in the Adirondacks!!! After reading some of these reviews, I wasn't expecting much. To my surprise the rooms were great. Very basic. They were large and clean with a great "backyard" overlooking the lake. Yes, the TV is small. Wireless internet was not available in the room. There was no hair dryer or refrigerator. But I wasn't really there to watch TV and surf the web. The pool was small but was heated which was nice after a day of freezing cold water at the Water Safari. Smoking is allowed, which is a plus for some of us. As far as location......AWESOME!!! Would definitely stay there again. Would definitely recommend to a friend.
I have to admit, the Forge Motel has three things going for it
Location, Location, Location.
The front desk staff are very nice and helpful, and the decor in the main lodge where the pool is appears to be nicely updated, and really gives you the feel of being up north with out being gaudy.
Our rooms were clean and we had plenty of space, however a little investement in an update would definately be worth it. My hope is the owners will read this and take my recommendations.
1. Yank out the carpet and replace it.
2. Although the carpet goes to the edge of the door, replace the front entry way with pergo or tile - something that individuals visiting in the sloppy winter season can step on, remove their shoes and at the same time they don't destroy your newly installed carpet
3. New blankets and comforters, with an Adirondack feel would be nice.
4. In the winter, extra blankets and pillows in the room, or a courtesy card with information of how to get them.
4. Hairdryer and a coffee maker are a MUST.
We had a wonderful time while staying at the Forge Motel. The kids loved the pool and the breakfast was a plus. Also the lawn was great for our kids to play on. The motel was located right on the lake with great views. The rooms where very clean ( I am glad I didn't believe the other reviews), The front desk and housekeeping staff was very helpful and friendly. We will def. be back next July!!!!
I wish that I had listened to the review about "looks are deceiving"! The front desk part is gorgeous but... the rooms they had us stay in (which are hidden behind the big A-frame) were very out-dated. We couldn't shut the 1970's window slats on the front or back doors. There was a giant bug on the ceiling, which scared the small kids. They offer breakfast but there was nowhere to sit as there was one picnic-sized table with a family of 6 sitting at it and another small round table with an older couple sitting at it. We had to sit in chairs hunched over a coffee table that only left us a small corner to eat off of (there were numerous giant decorations on it). There was a couch and two chairs in front of the TV that others were eating on. You may say to yourself... why did we not eat in our room???.... because we had to drive to the beautiful front desk as we were hidden way out back. There is a picture on their website that does show this room we were in. It is the very bottom pic on the right and, yes, those are 1970's office chairs in those rooms....I COULD NOT BELIEVE I PAID $108 FOR ONE WEDNESDAY NIGHT HERE!!! AND THE POOL IS NOT HEATED AND WAS FREEZING. I didn't listen to the reviews but please listen to mine. The Old Forge Motel was much, much better and wished they had a room when I needed it. I would rather camp on the front lawn (The Forge Motel doesn't have one...LOL) then stay in that back alley room again. Gee... the view out back was nice though....Good luck with your search..
I wish I read some of the reviews before going, I don't know where the good reviewers stayed but it couldn't have been at the The Forge Motel. It was terrible! The room was so in need of repair, there was mold on the tiles in the bathroom and on the ceiling. We wouldn't even leave the blanket and bedspread on the bed they were dirty and ancient! The room smelled terrible. There are alot of nice hotel's in the area that we would go to next time. Live and learn I guess.
I can't even leave any stars for service, cleanliness, or value. For the
$ 100.00 we spent on that room, it makes me sick to think we threw our money away on that room!
I will however give them 5 stars for their location, they do have a great spot, maybe they should invest alitlle money and making the motel worth going to.
We walked into the Office to get our keys and they were smoking, isn't that illegal?!? After we got our Huge dungeon keys we parked in front of our room where we had to step over a bag of garbage to get in, cleaning woman smoking outside of our room. Upon entering it was gross both beds were dirty had flies and moths old tiny TV curtains had holes, bathroom had no toilet paper and door had a lock on it that i could bite through, reeked of ciggerettes and dirt. Could not stay here due to unsanitary conditions we turned our keys were denied a refund and went home. DONT GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!! Waters Edge Inn is the Best.
Our family has been coming up to Old Forge for years. We love to stay at the Forge Motel because of its beatuiful location on the water. The room price was very fair and if we wanted to bring the old family dog it was the only place in town that would accept him. The room was very clean. We had a great time and we'll be coming back for the next 20 years.
What did we like about this place? NOTHING.....Dislike? EVERYTHING! We arrived and the woman at the desk was miserable - and yes the place smelled like wet animals!! We get to our room and the heater is broken (mid February) - the front door had no deadbolt or additional locks and I noticed the door must have been broken in at one point because the door jamb was all smahed and repaired. The bath drain did not work - you were standing in 6" of water by the time you were done with a shower! And "Amentities Not found Anywhere Else" - thats right - they were NOT found anywhere here either- no little bottles of lotion or shampoo - no hair dryer - no coffee pot - just a big smelly cold room with moth eaten covers, lousy old mattresses and a 19" TV! Let's not go down the road of internet service! The table and chairs was out of a bad 70's movie and were falling apart. We chose this place based on their website - what a joke! On top of this, the guy next door was a jerk and if you like to sleep in (past 7 am that is) on the weekend - don't bother - the snowmobiles parked right out behind your large drafty sliding door will wake you up and then keep you up until midnight. Don't get me wrong, we went for the purpose of riding too and had our sleds with us, but we had some consideration for our neighbors! I am sure the pool was fantastic if you wanted to put your suit on and walk in the snow to the "lodge", get wet and walk back in the cold.......This place is the pits! And WAY over priced - I have stayed in $50 a night motels that were MUCH nicer! It is a shame because this place has massive potential! However, as we made our way through town, we did see some really nice places and when I checked the rates - we will stay elsewhere next year!!
