Chalet Leon is the last place we'd ever want to stay again. The property looked run-down. Our rooms were tiny and smelled musty despite a dehumidifier. Although the rooms looked reasonably clean, there were cobwebs behind the small fridge, wallpaint on the sink, and the bathroom was devoid of ameneties except some soap. The "view of the lake" was obstructed by large trees. The office of the "Chalet" was so messy that we decided to forego breakfast although it was included in the price for the rooms ($75 per room + tax). We had a nice breakfast in town (Watkins Glen) and learned from a waitress of several nice, clean B&Bs in the area and only wished we had known sooner.
If you are looking for a really ecclectic and funky experience right out of the 1950's, try this place. Be aware it is NOT the Holiday Inn but clean with plenty of towels and comfortable beds. No phone but TV and some refrigerators and VCR's. This is a small friendly motel decorated in yard sale 50's, 60's and 70's furniture but clean and cheap. Close to Seneca Lake Wine Trail and Watkins Glen racetrack. You can rent a room in the 3-story motel or a small cabin along the wooded hillside. Nothing fancy but basic with a view of Seneca Lake and Hector Falls. You can hike down the hill to the lake (moderate walk) and use their beachside canoe and beach.
Clean, comfortable motel rooms overlooking the lake. Kitschy private cabins near the falls. Beautiful sunsets from the deck. Friendly staff- like visting friends at their lake place. Close to wineries, Watkins Glen, excellent restaraunts.
Chalet Leon is not a "typical" motel....nor a bed and breakfest...it's something inbetween.. Liz (the manager) is awesome...makes u feel at home! yes....the room and cabins are eclectic...but it totally adds to the atmosphere!
Liz has updated some of the cabins to add air conditioners...there is also
1. 3 firepits
2. 2 decks overlooking thelake
3. grills for use
4. access to Hector falls (3rd largest falls in NYS)
5. Playground and sandbox for kids
6. Continential breakfest for all...(LOCAL) fruits and fresh pastries from local bakery...including special orders for vegetarians/vegans
Liz...the manager is awesome....totally free spirit ...people who come to Chalet...don't come for the rooms....they come for Liz...she totally rocks!!!!
I hope others who have been here and experienced "liz" will write reviews and show how awesome this place is....!!!
Yes...itis older...but it has penache...lol...and yes it's VINTAGE!!!!
My son & I stayed at Chalet Leon & were totally happy with the experience. The people there were fantastic. They had just suffered a lot of water damage from a heavy rain but that did not deter them. The cabin we stayed in was nicely furnished & had wonderful beds. People who do not like the simple things in life & need to be catered to with all the fancy trimmings in the bathrooms, etc. will not be happy here as evidenced by the one negative comment I read. My son & I had been traveling for a week & stayed in a lot of different hotels with all the fancy little soaps, etc. Along with the fancy soaps came some very stuck up staff. Other guests don't seem to be as willing to say hi in that kind of atmosphere. We enjoyed our stay at Chalet Leon more than any of those places. We did not get to use the fire pit because of the rain but the scenery at the falls is awesome. We felt at home there & will definitely be back. Beau is a gracious canine host & the cat made himself right at home in our cabin for a few hours. He must have known I missed my cats. Thanks Liz & family for a great time.
this a great hotel that makes you feel at home. My favorate part was setting up a lawn chair next to the falls. The breakfast is nice with fresh pastries from the local bakery, cereal, begals, tea, oatmeal, fresh fruit and fresh coffee. Our cabin was very nice : cable tv, A/C comterble beds & it was very clean. The private beach is beatuful you can fish and you can also take the canoes out... don't worry there free. Liz and the staff were very nice and helpfull. If you need somthing they are down in the flash. Over all this has been the most beatiful, and amazing hotels i have ever stayed at!
This place is Rustic but beautiful, with a setting on Seneca Lake and a few steps to Hector Falls. If you like to camp and get away from noise, this is the place for you. The owner Liz and her dog Bo are the best hosts. The stay is reasonably priced, great view of lake and waterfall. Request cabin #7 if you want to sleep near the waterfall. There are cabins and rooms available.
The town of Watkins Glen is 2 miles away and it is quaint and a host of one of the largest Gorges in America.
Four years ago we stumbled upon the Chalet Leon after a long night of driving, to see if they had a room. They did, and we have been going there every year since. The manager Liz, is a warm and wonderful host, who we now think of as a friend, and our dog Winnie is quite infatuated with the Chalet's Siberian Husky mascot, Bo. Seneca Lake has many hidden treasures, one of them is this little road side motel, with it's lake front access and private water fall.
Recently, my girlfriend and I stayed at The Chalet Leon in Hector, NY. Meeter The Greeter, an orange cat, welcomed us to our little cabin which was warm and inviting. In the morning, we'd wake up from our cozy bed, walk to the office, pet Beau the Husky, get a good mug o' joe and a fresh blueberry muffin, then slowly start our day by looking out over beautiful Seneca Lake. Afterwards, we'd take a short stroll to Hector Falls and let the falling water pour over us. Often we wouldn't leave the grounds, just lounge around and read by a ledge of the falls that looks like an endless pool pouring into the lake. The Chalet was in a good central location to all of our daily activities around the Finger Lakes with wineries close by. At night, we'd hang out with the super cool Liz, Chalet Leon's manager, along with some of the other guests. We'd sit by a fire, drink wine, and have some laughs under the stars. I couldn't be more satisfied with our experience there and will definitely go back. The Chalet isn't for the stuffy or snobby; it is a place for more realistic, down to earth, people.
Chalet Leon is not a "typical" hotel....nor a bed and breakfest...it's something inbetween.. Makes you feel Right at home....The cabins are eclectic.. We stayed in cabin #7 for 2 nights..
