Description

Hartford is the gateway to beautiful New England, just between New York City and Boston. It only takes about two hour driving. The hostel is located in the West End, an area of elaborate Victorian mansions. It is possible to walk to almost everything from the hostel including the world-famous rose gardens at Elizabeth Park and the nearby homes of Mark Twain and Harriet Beecher Stowe.There are lots of things to see and do in Hartford. You can also visit the Connecticut Opera, Wadsworth Atheneum, Christ Church Cathedral which is one of the oldest gothic churches in the US, or the Bushnell, a major performing arts center.You may prefer to cruise down the Connecticut River on the Lady Fenwick or enjoy East Haddam's Goodspeed Opera House, the Air Museum at Bradley International Airport, or Gillette Castle in Hadlyme, the home of actor William Gillette, best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. Very nice place to stay

There's a joyful and happy vib to the place. It's in a nice area with lots of big houses. People at the hostel and Hartford are helpful and nice. I would visit the place again soon. I had a really nice break and rest when I was there. The place is beautiful and the area is very close to nature. You can see wild chipmunks and rabbits around and colorful butterflies and flowers.

Rude host

I was not allowed to check in before 5 pm. Next morning, just as I was about to check out at 10:45, the owner came and start yelling at me that I will have to pay late check out fee as I haven't checked out at 10:00 am sharp?!. Hostel was almost completely empty, and he didn't really need my bed at 10:00. I found him just rude and impolite. The hostel is located in a rather old house and it is not very clean. They don't even give you clean sheets and pillow cases. Nothing. The location is very convenient if you want to visit the the Mark Twain house. The hostel is located in a quiet and leafy neighborhood.

Not much choice.

Very old building and not properly maintained. Excellent location, but feels dirty and old. Things don't get dusted/washed. Felt like I was breathing dust everywhere I went in the building. Kitchen very dingy and dark, like there are layers of grease and dirt accumulated on cupboards and appliances. Not very appetizing. Eat out!!

Really peaceful and quite

Wat I like about the place is the peaceful energy that I got when I stayed there. I had a very restful time and got my energy renewed. I am from NYC so this is quite a nice place to recharge. The people in Hartford is very friendly and the city had a very serene theme. I have gone back there numerous times to visit friends and relatives and this place is the one I chose to stay at over and over again. I would recommended to anyone who wants to visit Connecticut or Hartford.

We would recommend it to friends and family....

We enjoyed our stay at the hostel and had met many nice people there. The building is in a peaceful area surrounded by beautiful houses. We especially enjoy the nearby organic Whole Food store, the farmers market (which is only two blocks away) and the famous Elizabeth Park with its huge rose and rose garden.

Not the cleanest place

The Mark Twain hostel is ideally located on Farmington Avenue in Hartford, CT. Farmington Avenue takes you right down the street to downtown Hartford and is off the E bus line. The proprietors are an extremely nice older couple. The rooms are all shared, and relatively clean, but pretty rustic -- don't expect any fancy digs. The worst part was the terrible bathroom -- you couldn't take a bath, and the bath/shower area was basically falling apart. The water pressure was terrible and there was no hot water. In addition the shared kitchen was disgusting --the dishes weren't clean, there were flies everywhere, and everything needed a good scouring, frankly. I give this place a mixed review. The proprietors are nice and friendly, it's a good location, the common area is decent, and the rooms are OK, but major work needed on bathroom/kitchen areas!!

Its good if you have no other place to stay

I recently stayed in this hostel. It was altogether a different experience from hostels in UK or EU. There's no AC and its an old bldg. I guess the hostel rooms are not maintained properly. The moment u enter the hostel U can feel a staunchy smell that I dont know why. Its dirty too. There are lot many maps & other info all around but all 2-3 years old. I would say if you can't find any other place or student on budget then use it for your temporary acco.
