Wonderful stay!
By ,
Great hosts, Kevin and Darlene, and very accommodating. Rooms are charming and very clean. We met some very friendly and nice people there and had a fun time. Cafe food was excellent as was the recommended restaurant; as well as the service. They have done a wonderful job in refurbishing an old building and in keeping with its history. We wish them lots of luck and clients! Jane and John

best kept secret that you should here
By ,
I was completely impressed with the hotel as a hole. I had no problems checking in, I was shown personally everyroom which by all are very classy, Breakfast in the morning was outstanding for any hotel. The family running the hotel and staff were more helpful than i would be if that were my job. we checked in on a pretty cold December night and the owner herself bought us extra blankets to go along with the already warm and cozzy room. The store below yes maybe odd but all items are tresures that in some way or another represent the culture of the Mccloud area. Again the owner not "kevin" but his wife shared with us the stories and histories of the town and the surrounding area with use over dinner in the cafe. I live out of a hotel 40 weeks a year and this is the best I've found this is theonly hotel that has made me want to call any place but my own house "home". All in all i will recommend anyone and everyone to stay and chat with the owners and staff of the Mccloud River Mercantile Hotel.

Wouldnt recomend
This was an odd stay all around. First, it was hard to find. We saw the store but could not figure out where the hotel was. We had to go to another hotel in the area and ask them There were no signs, other than a sign on the door to the actual hotel entrance. Not visible from the street. We were told at the other hotel to go to the store and they would direct us. Walking in the store was odd in itself. We were looked at by all as if we had three heads (each). Felt very strange, went to the person behind the counter and were told, "well your early". Not welcome, not sorry but we are not quite ready yet for you, but just "your early". Then miss personality said she would go check on the room and come right back. One hour later still no sign of her. Long and short of it we had to wait till way after the advertised check in to get our room. My sister and her husband also stayed at the hotel and have almost a mirror experience trying to check in. Once in the room we were somewhat disappointed as it did not have all the features that were advertised on the website. However the room was nice and it was decently clean. The other problem with the room was that it was stifling hot. The air conditioning unit was on and working but way too small for the size of the room. We told (yet another) miss personality at the desk and she said well I'm sure its working. We said NO its not. In the end the owner (I assume) and only friendly person there Kevin brought up a swamp cooler he filled with ice. It did help some but at this point we were clear we did not want to be there. We asked to cancel our reserved second night. When asked why, we told them it was too hot and the room was not what they advertised. They did acknowledge that, and say instead of the $250.00 per night advertised rate they would charge us $195.00. We said that's fine, but we still want to cancel our second night. The second miss personality said, in a discussed voice, "most people would be happy with the $195.00 and stay." Guess we are not most people. The restaurant attached had decent to good food, but again the service was severely lacking. Kevin was the only friendly person we dealt with there. He was very understanding and accommodating, however I would not recommend this hotel. In all fairness they had recently opened and hopefully at some point will gain some experience in customer service and it would be a nice hotel.

I can understand your concern but I think you may have the Mercantile Hotel confused with another Hotel in our area. We only have 10 rooms and we would be glad to rent one, five or ten rooms. The Mercantile was built in 1897 and the Hotel added in 2007. We are also located on Main Street next door to the Shasta Sunset Dinner Train. We offer beautifully appointed accommodations that reflect McCloud’s history from the 1890’s to the 1940’s. Please give us a call if you haven’t booked your rooms.

Reservation problems

This hotel has some very weird policies!!! I wanted 10 couples to book rooms here. I was told that for a group we had to book the whole hotel (15 rooms)- I did not have 14 couples wanting to go (one room was already booked). If we called as individuals, we were only allowed a TOTAL of 5 rooms. So instead of us having 10 rooms booked, they lost ALL of our business. They also were not going to allow us to use our AAA discount if we each booked the 5 rooms!!! What a way to run a business!!
