Don't go unless you want scabies
By Irit, 01/29/09
I have scabies now after learning that homeless people are now given rooms in this hotel- permanent rooms. Sadly, they are smelly, dirty and contaminating all shared public rooms, like that bathrooms. That is how I ended up with scabies. I'm sure any parent sending their child here will want this information. AVOID this filthy place. I will not recommend it and hope that others are given warning about the homeless tenants that are spreading diseases, scabies, lice, and other problems including lung diseases like tuberculosis common in the homeless community. This hotel should be closed down by the city and replace the management who allow hotel guests to be exposed to this environment.

A NYC education
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/04/08
My daughter rented a room in The Dexter, which she intended to use for college purposes. The room was listed as a studio, but really turned out to be a tiny room with no bath or kitchen. The rent listed was for $950 and she was told that it would increase annually by $50. We later learned that the room is registered as an SRO and that the rent is much cheaper than what she ws told to pay. In addition, the lobby had an old, bad smell to it, there were no sprinklers on her floor and the resident on her floor informed us that her neighbor's apt. was infested with bedbugs, which mgmt. does nothing about. My shock over this behavior is nothing compared to my daughter's grief over accepting the fact that she will not have an apt. in time for school. I can't understand why the broker and mgmt would take advantage of a student who was going to struggle hard to pay the rent they were asking, when the room's rent was much cheaper. I would never recommend The Dexter House to anyone and I'm sure the illegal things I found out about this place is just the tip of the iceberg.

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/07/07
Please do not book a room over there! I know the building is infested with bed bugs and they dont spray. The city health department should go there

Be prepared to eat out ...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/05/06
The best thing about this hotel is location - we were within walking distance of the 86th St subway station as well as Broadway / Amsterdam avenues and Central Park. Worst thing about our stay was that the power situation in the hotel is bad. We stayed in a wing that had all 3 rooms occupied on the 7th floor and the power used to trip whenever we switch on the microwave. Thats not bad for most people who can eat out, but vegetarians beware ... That said, rooms were reasonably clean and the response of staff to service request was timely and good.

dexter house
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 02/02/05
dexter house is the perfect hotel for staying in new york in summer. try and get a room that faces onto W86th street. its close to riverside park (a beautiful park) and broadway. the double rooms are spacious and bright, and the bathroom is small but nice. provided is a tv, fridge, two large wardrobes and hangers, a microwave, teo large chests of drawers and a table and chairs, as well as two large and comfortable beds. its quiet at night, even though its close to busy streets, and its not too loud during the day either. its perfect. the perfect place.
