Stay away !
By Ken, 5/22/12
It was our Anniversary, and we booked the carriage ride, a massage, and the nights stay. The carriage ride was an hour long, and the driver took us down the path that had trees hanging over the road with poison ivy on them, he managed to drive close enough to the poison ivy when he pulled over to the side of the road to let cars past, that had I not ducked, I would have brushed the vine with my face. I am lucky that I am not allergic to the stuff and I must say the driver was clueless. The carriage ride was over and on to the massage we went, only to find a run down room that was not conducive to relaxing. ( By the way the massage room is next to the indoor pool, which the pool was dirty and cold) . The massage was not very good, but it and the carriage ride are booked as an outsourced service to the Castle. Ok, so we checked in, and the room was very nice, all seemed like it would turn out ok until we realized that the air conditioning was not working. (Now why would a place put room fans in an air conditioned room, if they did not know they had troubles with the air? That should have been our first clue ) As we turned the air conditioning on in the room, we went to dinner thinking the room would be cool upon our return. We had dinner at the Castle restaurant that served a Walleye, that we were not sure was even Walleye (they do not serve wine on Sunday so don't count on a Romantic dinner with wine if you dine on that day of the week) . Anyhow, we walked back to our room, and met some people who were sitting outside, we chatted with them for about an hour and then went to our room. The room was still hot and stuffy. I checked the air conditioner ( a single room unit) and it was blowing air but it was warm. We called the front desk but they were gone for the night, we called maintenance and no one picked up. Needless to say we were forced to leave. Oh sure they did credit the cost of the room, and they did admit that all the units lost air conditioning on a night that was 80 degrees, but they had to have known they had trouble with the units otherwise why put floor fans in the rooms???

Will go back!!!
By Matthew, 4/27/12
Just came back from a 2-day stay at the Castle....I was concerned because of all the negative press....and some of the exterior could use a spruce up....but I LOVED our room. We were in the Landoll Suite! Sooo romantic..which is just what is supposed to be! Quiet and secluded...but not a kid friendly place...but then it is not marketed to be so! And as for the exterior, well, what do you expect you would find in any castle anywhere in the world in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by forest? We celebrated our 30th in style and are planning a return in November!

Wish I'd Found The Reviews First...
By Christina, 4/15/12
The website is misleading and the stay was disappointing. Like most everyone else I found the place to be run down and actually shabby inside and out. I have antiques a hundred years older that I use daily that are in better condition than the "value" furniture in my room! There is no fitness room either. The grounds are beautiful and you can appreciate them during the unneccesarily long winding paths to and from the far away parking (next to the cemetary...didn't they mention that...no?). MY dinner of chicken alfredo was tasty although lukewarm. I would have enjoyed all of it but the server never came back to check on us and if she had, she would have learned that my daughter did not like her meal and would have had a chance to order something else. Instead I gave her my meal. The next morning we looked forward to (this is straight from the Home page) "morning walks through private forestland". Apparently they sold the "forestland" and I was told by the desk clerk, three times, strongly and condescendingly "DO NOT go outside the grounds! The owner doesn't like people wandering on his property! DO NOT enter the wooded areas!" (Me) Your website states that the grounds are available to walk...maybe someone should change the website. That's one of the reasons we came here." (her again) "I'm sorry...DO NOT hike outside the property lines!" (Me...considerably snarky tone) "I heard you the first two times...seriously?!?" Drive up...take a picture...drive away.

HORRIBLE, I mean HORRIBLE...
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/2/11
I can't believe they bill this place as a luxury hotel. Don'be be fooled by the website-totally misleading. We had horrible service at every turn. The room we stayed in was dirty, and when we asked for the room to be serviced they said they were "short staffed" that day??? The grouds look really neglected. Walkway lights are broken. The roof shingles need painted, the tower stairs are old and dangerous, and windows are dirty. What used to be a waterfall sits neglected. The restaraunt was probably the worst part of our experience. Our food was lukewarm, and the server seemed agrevated that we disturbed her (we were the only ones in the restaraunt). The pool was so full of chlorine we had to leave after only 5 minutes. We had originally booked the reservation for two days but we decided to leave after only one!

We enjoyed our stay -- the room was comfortable and quite clean. We enjoyed the staff in both the hotel and in the restaurant. We would definately return.

Run the Other Way!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/8/10
The rooms were pretty nice but small and extremely overpriced. It is located literally in the middle of nowhere and the only prerequisite for arrival is that you must get lost 3 times before you get there. If you are going for the food, forget it. If we knew what we were going to be in for when we left, I would have just stayed home and burned some food for the wife and myself. The place seems to be extremely neglected, you could make a swimming pool out of some of the pot holes in the parking lot and it looks like they have gutted the whole property of every tree that was more than a year old?

Wow..What a Dissapointment!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/15/10
My husband and I decided to spend the weekend here for a little get-a-way. I was expecting a lot more than what we got. There is not much to do. Whatever you do, don't eat at the restaurant on the grounds. They do not have much of a selection, and the prices are outrageous. They actually started shutting the lights/music off and sweeping the floors while we were still dining? The sauna was out of order, the hot tub was cold. You walk the grounds once and that is all there is. The rates for the rooms are outrageous compared to what you actually get. If I would of known what this was all about I would definitely have stayed somewhere else. There was maid service but we never received any. It was cool at night so we wanted our fireplace started but they did not know how to do it. I think the place is relatively new, but the grounds really look to be neglected? Not sure this place is going to make it.

Fantastic experience, but bring your own food.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/13/10
My girlfriend and I had a wonderful experience at Landoll's Mohican Castle. The staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating, helping my girlfriend surprise me with flowers in our room from a local florist. The room was clean and beautiful—we particularly enjoyed the heated tiles in the bathroom. Others have commented likewise, but the Celtic music playing in the room was a nice touch. The grounds were gorgeous and, if you choose, you can go hiking at Mohican Park, which is only a few minutes away. Our one complaint is that the restaurant was terrible. From the sea-foam green walls and odd country décor to the strange-tasting stuffed-chicken and overdone steak, our experience at the restaurant was anything but positive. When we arrived at 8pm, which was the latest seating, the waitress seemed irritated that we chose to eat at 8pm. In fact, she began sweeping and turned off some of the lights and the music while we were there. Although the rolls and blueberry jam were great, the meal definitely was not worth $50. Save your money and take your own food.

Unique, clean, but neglected
Incredible design and quality construction is being destroyed by neglect. The entrance is hard to find, the drive not well marked, and parking difficult to see. We did find our room to be quiet, clean, and stunningly designed. Staff was helpful when asked. The grounds are mowed and trimmed. However, decay is evident. Some room lights had no bulbs. Others had oddly mismatched bulbs (jarring in a luxury suite). Walkway lights are broken. The roof shingles need painted, the tower stairs are worn, and windows are dirty. A waterfall sits neglected, apparently half repaired and abandoned. The pool was hot and the whirlpool cold; windows to the patio were dirty, with old trash lying around. And forget the trails unless you are a serious back country hiker: they're not marked, tough to find, overgrown. (But beautiful with tons of butterflies.) The restaurant food varied: first night, cold rolls and lukewarm food. Second night, everything hot and tasty. Bet on the salads. We spent about $40 each night for 3 people, not including tip. The continental breakfast at the hotel is spare: bagels, Little Debbie muffins (!), juice, cereals and tea and coffee. Adequate but again not luxury. We really loved the feel of the Castle and the elegance of the suite. Overall our stay was fine; we enjoyed Loudonville and the Mohican park. There were other families with young children there (as we had too) but it still had a spacious resort feel. Let's hope someone fixes up details before the grounds and exterior deteriorate beyond repair. Worth the $129 a night, with tax $145? Yes.

Not a Luxury Hotel, Not worth the Price!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/7/10
Unfortunately I made a "non-refundable" deposit before I read these reviews so there was no going back. I almost got lost in one of the many huge pot holes that fill the main drive to the reception area. The cottage we stayed in was horrible. The first thing we had to do was kill a hornet that was buzzing around the room. We later found wasp spray under the sink so assumed this was a pretty common occurance. Don't plan on doing anything in the evening becuase there is practically no staff on site after 8:00pm. There was no internet and no cell phone reception. The tile floors in the cottage are not heated. The bed was uncomfortable with tiny pillows and worn out linens. Our deck had one chair, so I guess if I wanted to sit outside and talk to myself I was welcome to. The pool was freezing cold and the hot tub was luke warm. The rec froom was dirty, with old exercise equipment and a dusty old pool table. The restaraunt is very dark with no views. The food was very average. We passed on the "continental breakfast" the next morning that consisted of a couple pre-packaged muffins and juice. We were tempted by the half price "special" they were running, but won't be fooled again. I can't see how this place will stay in business much longer. Don't waste your money.
