Our choice for future visits to New Castle
By Charles Glinka, 3/30/10
We were very pleasantly surprised and pleased with our stay at Steve Alford's hotel. We were apprehensive given some of the negative comments in past reviews, but management has apparently paid attention and improved service. Our room was clean with a comfortable king size bed. The heating/ac system was easy to set and responded quickly. The toilet and shower are closed off from the sink which is a nice feature not found in many higher priced hotels. The daily maid service was quick and thorough. A large selection of TV channels is available including HBO at no extra cost. The wireless internet service is free, always on and fast, much better than I have encountered at pricier hotels. The hotel is next door to a Steak and Shake, a classic and cheap old fashioned burger and milkshake place. And last, but not least, Alford's features New Castle's famous Jack's donuts with it's included continental breakfast! If you haven't had Jack's donuts, this is reason enough to stay at Steve Alford's. Although lacking in some of the fancier amenities (no pool or restaurant in the hotel), Alford's does what it does quite well. We will definitely stay there again when we visit New Castle.

Best New Castle has to offer?
By Justanothermom, 7/30/08
Husband's family is from New Castle so we are familiar with Steve Alford's Inn. However, I checked reviews of what was available before we booked for a weekend gathering with family. Found that the room rate was reasonable and was sure Steve Alford would uphold his image with a hotel with his hame on it. The hotel looks fine from the outside and clean in the lobby and hallways. Other family members had issues with smoke smells in their non-smoking room, and another family member needed a handicap room for a wheelchair. The room was booked two weeks in advance, and verified it was still available by two family members two days before check-in. When brother and sister-in-law arrived needing the room, it had been given away to another person. This was an Indy Nascar weekend and by that time all other hotels were booked. I guess RESERVATION has no meaning to some hotels. The bathrooms are extremely small, but the room was adequate. The beds were made each day, and the beds seemed clean. One morning my husband was brushing his teeth to be startled by something jumping. It was a frog in our room. When he caught it to move it outside and reported to the front desk, they stated a housekeeper had found another one in that corridor the previous week. The last day there, while getting out of the shower, I found ants crawling near the tub, This inn did not receive high marks in our family. Don't know when we'll return to New Castle but hopefully there will be a better choice when we do.

We won't return
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/4/07
No alarm or radio in the room. Sheets and blankets had many worn thin spots and were stained. No drain plugs for the sink or the bathtub (the one for the tub we found on top of the shower wall the day we left). Smoke smell in hallways of "no smoking" rooms. Exit door to the outside did not lock.
