The Lion & Crow Lodge and Cabins, Luray

We had a great experience with the Lion & Crow Lodge! We definitely recommend renting a cabin from them. Bernie and Taylor were awesome, and gave us the Southern Hospitality we were hoping for. We stayed in Mountain View Pond, and it was simply perfect for our family of four. It was quaint and cozy, and had the rustic "mountain feel" that we wanted. Yet, it had all the modern accommodations of city living to make it more comfortable. Thank you, to the Lion & Crow Lodge and Bernie & Taylor for everything! We made priceless memories, and can't wait to return.

Our cabin (La Casita) was located on a hill, so we had some great views. The hot tub and the nearby hiking in Shenandoah were also big pluses. (It was really nice to come back from a long hike to a soak in the hot tub.) The pool table, DVD collection, outdoor grill*, fire pit and hammock were also nice amenities to have on a chilly fall evening. We would definitely return for a second stay, hopefully in warmer weather. *The grill could use a more frequent and thorough cleaning though. Thanks to the owners for the wonderful weekend. I'm confused by some of the negative ratings. We didn't have any problems with the staff or our cabin! Thanks for the great stay!

This was my first vacation I planned with my wife and 2 children ages 5 and 2. I got the Alpine Meadows cabin which is their highest priced cabin. The pictures showed such beautiful views of the mountains and was on an 125 acre private lot which I sounded great. After I paid they sent an email giving directions and the address. In the directions, it said when you arrive you will go about 2 miles on an unpaved gravel road and go up a hill and "Viola" Alpine Meadows. Well, we arrive at the address and start going on this unpaved road which is really bumpy and reach the "hill". Holy Freaking Cow! This hill is no joke. It took me 3 times to get up this hill. Tires spinning, foul language flying, and my wife praying but I made it up. You better have a 4WD car if you are going in the snow. However, the cabin itself was fantastic! The view truely is lovely. There was a crab apple tree my daughter picked from as well as many pear trees. There are also apple trees, blackberries and grape vines. I saw deer all over the place! The inside of the cabin was pretty clean as well. The only exception was there were ladybugs all over the ceiling of the den. I counted at least 32. They didn't bother anything or one so it was no big deal. Never saw a single spider, mouse, rat or any other pest. I played pool and ping pong in their basement and cooked out on the grill. The porch is a tad bit splintery. Overall, I would recommend this place. I just wasn't expecting that steep hill.

Stayed at the Dove's Nest (one of several properties Lion & Crow runs). While the surrounding area was beautiful and it was private and quiet, the place was for the most part, filthy. We were in shock. The outdoor grills hadn't been cleaned in ages, the stove in the kitchen had gross, greasy, caked on food that could have easily been cleaned with a few wipes. The pillow shams in the bedroom were immediately tossed aside as they had huge sweat stains on them. The worst offense of all was that wee had to purchase our own disposable dinnerware because when we opened the kitchen cabinets we discovered clusters of mouse droppings! When we complained, we were accommodated, but we were also stuck there for a week unable to reserve anything else on such short notice. I don't usually bother writing reviews of any kind...good or bad. But I think it's important that people reserving this place just from the lovely photos on their website should be warned. Needless to stay that was our first--and last--stay at a Lion & Crow property.

My Girlfriend and I celebrated our 2 year anniversary @ the Crow's Nest Chalet and it was the perfect way to celebrate our relationship. The cabin was clean, close enough to civilization but far enough away to forget about it, and peaceful. We lit huge fires, ate too much food and relaxed in the hot tub. Our only regret is that we had to leave. We love the area and look forward to coming back in the Fall for another getaway weekend.

I can't pick out just one thing we like about the place because we just love everything. It is truly a wonderful place to go to get away from everything. There is peace and quiet and it is just beautiful around there. It is truly a wonderful place for a vacation get away or a romantic get away. We have been there 4 times and we can't wait to go back there again. Each time is better than the time before.

A group of 10 friends booked the the lodge and were really excited to have a long weekend there. We were very dissapointed with it. The region is beautiful with a great view from the deck but other than that our experience was negative. It is not clear on the website, but the owners rent the second floor (which they refer to as the lodge) and they live on the first floor. Because of this the space is not very private, we received numerous calls from the owners and visits from them during the visit for no real reason. They were friendly, but it was a little much. This was minor in comparision to the cleanliness of the place. Mice were out of control- there was mice poop all over the place, even in one of the beds. At night many people could hear parades of them scurrying around. All in all much too high a price for what you get.

The cabin was very dirty with mouse droppings and cobwebs. The bathroom door handle fell off, the electric wiring did not function and was unsafe. The scenery is beautiful, but not worth the price.

My family just returned from a much needed vacation in the quiet, relaxing hillsides of the Shenandoah Valley. We chose to rent a cabin (for twice the cost) instead of a hotel room. The location of the cabin was quiet, even though it was in close proximity to numerous other cabins (a fact we were not informed of). Upon our arrival, we found the area surrounding the cabin to be littered with debris, broken glass, and rotted wood. The inside of the cabin was kept in an orderly fashion; however, a coat of dust and dead bugs covered everything from the fireplace mantel to dishes in the kitchen. Even the running water smelled of rotting eggs, which stifled any chance of romance in the hot tub!

I just returned from renting the main Lion and Crow Lodge with a large group. While the price was right, there are some things a prospective renter might want to know. It is not advertised, but there is only one bathroom for the entire lodge that sleeps 14. There were flies everywhere. The dining room table had nails sticking up and loose boards on it. Two of the mattresses were well past their prime. The living room does have a nice fireplace and the deck is a great place to sit and chat. For what we paid it was just ok, but I would not return, at least not to the main lodge. The one next door looked much nicer. Oh and lest I forget there is a back door from one of the bedrooms leading to the owner's home downstairs that pushes/pulls open, even when locked.
