I love the Sands
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/28/09
This is a motel for those who love old things. It is like stepping back to the 1950's with it's pink tiled bathrooms and wood paneling. The best thing about it is they allow pets and are very sweet and tolerant of dogs. The beach is just behind the hotel and it is pristine and uncrowded. They have the nicest staff at the beach. And if you are super picky about the latest most up to date amenities don't go here. But if you love quirky charm and truly nice proprietors, I highly recommend it.

For The Price, I Can't Complain
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/16/08
It was the cheapest place we could find and it wasn't so bad. The water did smell (like rust,) the rooms had an odor (of smoke) but you can bring your pets and they are really cheap. The staff there was SO nice and I loved going in to see their cats. I would recommend the place if you'r not looking for anything fancy, just a place to sleep.

Flea Bag
By Kelli K, 08/29/08
There was no maid service half the time we were there. Our room had fleas. It is a dump. I would never recommend it.

NEVER AGAIN
By Maria, 07/14/08
Never again. This place is a dump! The water is horrible, the beds, sheets and even the pool was FULL of sand. No wonder this place is called "The Sands". The rooms are very musky. I should have done my research before spending the money at this place.

Peace
By WmM, 03/19/08
We love the Sands. Sure, it is old, and out of date. Sure, there is no hot tub, or bar, or latte. Sure, everything seems a bit rickety. But our dog is a cripple. Had a stroke from Lymes disease. We can go to the Sands, have a great vacation, and be happy in a joint you just sleep in. The staff (especially Mary) is wonderful. Dogs are welcome. Daisy loves the beach, and it is a peaceful beach there, as opposed to the fun & bustle down at OC. I love it all, but the Sands is great for us. We'll go back in four weeks

Don't stay here-it's a dump!
By Shelly, 06/29/07
We just got back from a week in this dump. As soon as we arrived, we went to our room and discovered that the door lock was broken. I told my husband to go ask them to move us to another room. For some reason, that wasn't an option. It took 4 hours for someone to come and repair the door lock. In the meantime, we were trapped and couldn't go anywhere because we took our dogs and I wasn't willing to leave them alone in an unlocked room (not to mention the portable dvd player, vcr and all of our belongings). The room smelled terrible. We opened the windows each day to try to air it out, but the smell has permeated the room and isn't going anywhere. There is NO water pressure at all AND you have to wait about 15 minutes with the water running before it gets hot. My husband was in the shower, covered in soap suds and the water shut off entirely. Not even a drip! He went down to the desk to complain and they said it was because the pool guy was there filling the pool. Ok. How can you rent rooms when you can't guarantee running water? The air conditioner was so loud that it literally woke me up several times each night. We had an "apartment" and the appliances were so old that it was a disgrace (I'm talking originals from the 50's). The ceiling tiles were dirty and stained from water damage and on our second to last day we had the pleasure of a leak after a rain storm. The screen in the bathroom window had a big hole in it. There was a single pane glass window next to one of the beds in the bedroom and I was terrified that my kids were going to kick it in the night and shatter it. Duct tape all down the side of the bedroom door. 4 ceramic tiles popped up from the bathroom floor-just sitting in place, but no longer attached. We left the evening before we were due to check out because we just couldn't bear another night in the place. My husband asked for a discount, because of all of the issues that we had to deal with and they said no because the rates are so low to begin with. Oh, and I forgot to mention, in the living room, kitchen, dining area, there were 3 lamps and 2 light fixtures. Out of those 5...I had FOUR blown light bulbs . Went to the front desk to ask for light bulbs...they couldn't find any. This place is a disgrace. I don't want to see any other family get burned the way we did. Oh, and let's not forget the clientele that this place attracts. Not the best. We went because they accept pets...it was a mistake. Save your money. Board your dogs or get a dog sitter. Don't take them here. These people sell this hotel as being quaint with the ma & pa charm of the 50's. Instead, it's a dump that hasn't been updated. No charm here.

Stinky
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/13/06
There are no "non-smoking" rooms so they all stink no matter how much "Nutra-Air" is sprayed. The water smells terrible because of old pipes; you feel cleaner coming out of the ocean than taking a shower there. No way you'd rinse your mouth after brushing or drink the water. Door handles falling off, lock didn't work, A/C didn't work well & dripped terribly, flies and barking dogs. (they let pets stay there, which I admit would be a plus for some but not too good when the one in the room next to you doesn't ever stop barking) Only plus we can give was they let us stay on the lot after we checked out so we could go to the beach that day and not move our car.

A Slice of Americana by the Sea
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/28/06
The Sands Motel in Fenwick Island DE is reminiscent of a motel from the 1950s. While in its' faded glory, it is lovingly maintained and immaculate. Two floors of rooms, oceanside, look out on a pool and Bar-b-que grill (available to guests). Washer and Dryer are available to guests as well. Individual rooms are small, but have a refrigerator and microwave. This is a very family friendly and pet-friendly hotel. Owners rent VCRs and have many (old) movies available for rent as well. In addition to regular rooms, they have small efficiencies. The owners are very nice people. It is about a 75 foot walk to the beach.
