My family & I stayed at Madison Beach Motel for 4th of July 2008 for 4 nights. The location is great. We walked to the boardwalk/ beach in just a few minutes. We watched the fireworks from the balcony, so we avoided the crowds on the boardwalk/ beach. We didn't really have to use our car much since we were close to mostly everything. BUT... BIG BUT, the room was GROSS! Our feet were BLACK from walking on the carpet, which looked like it had NEVER been cleaned. The bathroom was FILTHY! There was MILDEW in the shower & shower curtain. The faucets were RUSTY. The room smelled like MILDEW/ SMOKE, which then made our clothes smell the same (Yuck!). The beds were so uncomfortable. I had horrible back pain from the springs poking me in my back & sides. The bedspread was noticeably unwashed. I didn't mind so much that the room & bathroom are tiny, b/c I'm only there to sleep & bathe, not actually spend my vacation in my room. You get what you pay for, but I CANNOT & WILL NOT tolerate an unclean room especially PAYING for one. I would NOT recommend Madison Beach Motel, not even on a budget!
I had started going to the madison in 2006 ands I used to go every memorial day and labor day weekend. I understood that it was a motel and wasn't expecting it to be a big room or big bathroom (but the bathroom is so small that when you open the door it misses the sink by an 1/8th of an inch) but me and my now ex-girlfriend use to go every year. Until the year of 2008 when I booked resevations and found out that they had raised the rates on labor day from $99 a night to $175 a night, mind you this wasn't in a few years time this is with in one year.
So I booked it anyway cause my ex wanted it. Well when I was down for memorial day weekend we started walking around looking for cheaper places cause for the price we were going to be paying on labor day we could of gotten a place on the boardwalk. So we found a cheaper place called the oceanic motel (which is in a better location right behind the inlet) and we went back to cancel our resevations for labor day when we tried to the lady told me that I would still get charged a cancel fee for them holding the room. Which I then stated that 3 months in advance isn't a good enough notice for you guys and you still have to charge me. So she asked why am I cancelling my reservation. And I stated to her cause it's to exspensive compared to last years. So the lady looks and me and says well if we drop your rate to $109 a night can you do that and I told her of course. After I was done barging her down like a used car salesman said I would never go back there again cause I have a hard time to do busniess with someone who jacks up prices for no good reason just to take advantage of their customers.
This was the most disgusting place i have ever stayed. We only booked this place because it was the one of the few places that would take a 1 night reservation. Room smelled like pee, had a cinderblock wall with no headboards, the bathroom was smaller than my closet, it was DIRTY, the older lady at front desk is MEAN, our lamp had burnt out at one point and was totally black and all disfigured like it had caught on fire before, floor was nasty, never even took my shoes off once, and the beds were like sleeping on rocks shoved in plastic bags, and the bedding is disgusting! I slept on my beach towels to avoid touching the bedding at all, i felt more dirty getting out of the shower than i did before going in, pool is SMALL, and of course DIRTY, hair floating around in it.. YUCK! This is the most disgusting place i have ever seen in my entire life! DEFINATELY NEVER GOING BACK!!!!!!!!!!!
We initially reserved 5 rooms and promised that three of the rooms were large rooms by the street side. When we arrived, all five rooms were by the pool side; which are the smallest rooms on the property (with no microwaves). The staff there was nice enough to find four larger rooms and swithed us since we had infants with us. Then the general manager came, and the service then declined from that point on. The general manager (missing all but two teeth) was rude afterwards. Any requests we made were turned down and she was bitchy about everything. I only had issues with the general manager. Overall, the staff are nice. The rooms and bathrooms are not very clean. For the price we paid ($160) in July, we should have received better service and rooms.
It was a long shot, but I thought we found a nice place to stay that wanted to make sure its rooms were filled on the July 4 weekend. As it turned out, they were willing to tell you whatever you wanted to hear to get you down there and take your money.
It all started on a Friday evening. I started calling around knowing most places require a 3 night minimum but wanting to come down after the kids' Saturday morning sports. Both the male and female voices on the phone enthusiastically said yes, they would rent my family a room for Saturday and Sunday nights, check out on Monday.
Since we were within the 7-day window, if we changed our minds, we would be accountable for the first night's rent ($219). OK, I could handle that, so I booked the room.
On the way down, my wife found out some friends were staying in nearby Bethany. Thinking we were only on the hook for $219 (the first night's rent), I said "let's tell the staff at the motel when we arrive that we want to check out early, so they can rent the room for Sunday and/or Monday. WRONG.
When we arrive and say our plans have changed and we will be checking out on Sunday, the guy at the front desk ... the professional one with the spacers creating holes in both ears, the pierced tongue, and other piercings below his bottom lip ... tells us that we are on the hook for $438 (both nights) if we check in and/or the $219 (first night) if we do not check in.
Hmmm, didn't see that one coming. He and the woman at the front desk then tell us that they have a 2-night minimum. Well, I wasn't told that little detail on the phone and since I asked on the phone before we came down what we were accountable for and was told the deposit of $219, I feel I was lied to or staff neglected to tell me about the $219/$438, damned if you do/damned if you don't, catch-22.
Don't make this same mistake. I have been going to OC for more than 30 years and never encountered these shenanigans. There are far too many nicer places to stay than to make this mistake twice.
The A/C had been off for a while when we arrived at our room. It smelled like feet, and the comforter on one bed was not clean. The other bed was lopsided with a spring poking through. Shower curtains were mildewed. Vomit on the balcony. We paid $70/night for this!
They're are two great things about this motel that will keep me going...Location, and the balcony. The location of this motel is wonderful! The rooms and bathroom are small, but how long do you spend in a motel room at the beach? They could be a little more clean upon arrival, but overall I would go back.
We stayed for the weekend of the 4th. Initially we looked at a room and were please with it. I was ok with a small bathroom. However, room smelled nasty, beds were VERY uncomfortable, Housekeeping was very rude and abrupt! Our feet were constantly black. I went out and purchased a blanket for the kids to play with their toys on the floor.
When i opened the door i knew it was not going to work for me. The room was so small and it was highly unsanitary. There is know way i could sleep there and i love camping and the ground is cleaner. I went and found a knew hotel at a better price and left the hotel. My money was not refunded or even an offer to reimburse my money.
The smell was bad. There was only one light that had a lampshade that was covered. The beds were uncomfortable. They had plastic sheets. There was mold on the shower curtain. The carpets were bad. There was no phone in the room. I wouldn't stay here again.
