We stopped at Count Gilu, after a long trip from South Carolina, Ready to stay for several days. BUT, they do not allow pets of any kind, we have a small dog, that is well trained, Never goes in the house, but no exceptions, so if you have a beloved furbaby, you might want to go on over to Pocahontas Motel, pets are welcomed there, and the people are absolutely wonderful!
Count Gilu is a gem in the Wilds of West Virginia. The Staff is warm and friendly. The owner has the charm and grace of a real Contessa. The atmosphere is unique as well as relaxing.
The furnishings are a eclectic mix of many eras, from Art Deco to contemporary, and anything in between. This is truly a place to get away from all the stress caused by living in a modern world.
Places to eat unique to the area were suggested by the friendly staff. A trip to Welch is not complete without eating at the Sterling drive In; It has been in operation since 1945. Also, in neighboring Bramwell, the Blue Moon Cafe is a good place as well. The country store in Coalwood has delicious breakfast and lunch fare. Also, on highway 52, you will find a KFC. Overall, the friendly folk at Count Gilu , made it possible to experience the true hospitality of of West Virginia!
The Count Gilu is a garden spot located in the wilds of West Virginia. It offers tasteful clean rooms with extra small touches that will remind a sophisticated traveler of Europe - perhaps because the owners designed it that way. It's romantic and pleasant, with its only drawbacks being a hard-to-find location - but that adds to its charm, making it a lovely oasis in an otherwise rather depressing part of the state. Highly recommended.
