Can't wait to return !!!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/3/11
Having lived on the Eastern Shore most of my life I have passed Rittenhouse Lodge many, many times and always wished I had the time to stay there. My boyfriend and I have been exploring the backroads of Virginia and we wanted to stay there. What a treat ! A step back to a gentler time... clean, big fat white towels, porch to sit on and look at the beautifuly landscaped gardens, and a flat screen T.V. We would highly recomend this to anyone. Jody N. Salisbury, Md.

return after about 25 years
By michael, 2/28/10
I found this motel back in the early 1980's and stayed there a number of times when I did antique shows in Atlanta. I found it, quite by accident, when I was returning late at night recently from Florida and took the Big Bridge from Norfolk to Delmarva. The place had not changed a bit. The owner was the same kind gentleman and the rooms were the same, albiet they had cable and a new heater/airconditioner. If you do not like the sterility and bad air of the big corporate motels and want a slightly worn but comfortable room with plenty of hot water and a wonderful setting in a little forest, stay there. Nice guy and a journey back into a time of the 50's where it was still personal.

"Bob's Lobbs" Lobblolly Pines
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/12/09
Bob is a great storyteller. Has planted every square inch, paths, brook, pools, etc. Md. Native Plant Society visits yearly. Spring flowering looks like The Masters. The trees are what the shore looked like in 1600's before white guy. Rooms in back large and clean. A great throwback motel owned and operated by a man who cares and matters.

We're going back next year!!
We had to attend a family wedding and decided to make a mini-vacation out of a long weekend. We chose Rittenhouse for a number of reasons, not the least of which was because it reminded us of places we used to stop when traveling with our parents when we were kids. We also chose it because of the lack of amenities. We basically wanted a quiet place to stay because I work downtown and my husband drives a truck, and we have noise all the time. We loved Mr. Rittenhouse and were never told that we couldn't eat or drink in the room; we got coffee in the office every day and took it to our room, which was NEXT to the office, and Mr. Rittenhouse saw it. The paths winding around the lodge were relaxing and interesting. The wooded setting belied the fact that it is right on Route 13. It's within 10 minutes of Cape Charles' beach, cool shopping, and some interesting restaurants. If you're looking for room service or even a restaurant right next door, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for a charming, comfortable, clean, and quiet place to stay, this is definitely the ticket.

Wonderful, clean, and personable
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/23/08
My family (two adults, and two kids) stayed here for a weekend. Great place - the motor lodge time left behind. It was wonderful sharing a piece of Americana that you don't find anymore with our kids. We loved the nature paths, complete with signs, and the personal attention from Mr. Rittenhouse. We were running late on our arrival day, and had less than an hour to get to a wedding in Frankfort (and we were still in shorts and unshowered.) We called ahead to make sure he was there, and tell him of the situation, and he had the room ready to go, including opening the door and turning on the hot water! How many chain hotels will do that for you? We went to Stingray's on Mr Rittenhouse's recommendation, and it was great too. Can't wait to visit again.

Great for Fishermen
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/13/07
Great location for fishermen wanting access to Cape Charles, Kiptopeake, or Oyster. Good parking for trailers. Rooms are a little dated, but clean and well maintained. Ask for a room around back and you can keep an eye on your rig.

Two characters: Rittenhouse Motel itself and Mr Rittenhouse himself.
By daryl vanhorne, 11/8/07
We like personal attention and Robert Rittenhouse gives it. He is a fount of info for things to do and places worthwhile to eat. We have stayed twice before and will be staying again soon.

Beautiful Hideaway
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/18/07
This little Inn was just beautiful. The rooms are a bit older, but they were clean and very spacious. The grounds are a nature bonanza of quiet peaceful green. There is even a small brook with benches to sit on and just enjoy the sounds of nature. Close enough to a grocery store and fast food places, but far enough away from the road to be peaceful. The owner and his staff were very accomodating and friendly...we will for sure stay there again when we visit the Shore...

Keep your Insulin outside if you are Diabetic
By jeremy, 7/16/07
Told my uncle that is diabetic he needed to keep his insulin outside because no coolers are allowed in the room... and he didnt want any eating or drinking in the rooms... Would not advise staying there if you are diabetic or need to keep any medicine cold... I guess the same goes for babies too ( my wife cant feed our 6 month old daughter in the room) .... not a class act and seemed careless and clueless when my uncle asked him about keeping his medicine inside so that its not in the heat and can not be tampered with outside....
