Not the friendly, welcoming place it used to be
The Copper King has been home for our extended family for almost 30 years. It has many things going for it: very clean, perfect location, on-site owners, and great yard with grill, swings, picnic tables, horseshoes, and the river right out back. Sadly, our most recent visit will be our last. The new owners have not lived up to the Copper King’s reputation.
Trouble started the moment we arrived. We were placed in different rooms than those we thought we had reserved. It is possible there was some misunderstanding when I made the reservation many months in advance. But there was no misunderstanding when I called to confirm our reservation one month prior to arrival, and again just one week prior. Both times, I was assured that we were booked into the specific riverfront rooms I expected. On arrival, our hosts placed us in different rooms and were completely unapologetic about the problem, instead immediately set about trying to prove me wrong and ignoring the fact that I twice confirmed the reservation. Simply saying “I’m sorry for the misunderstanding” goes a long way. Doing anything to rectify the problem is even better. Neither of those things happened here. With no other choice, we settled in to different rooms than those we had confirmed. Our hosts never spoke to us again during our one week stay. Past owners have always been very hands-on, always out and about on the property, and made it a point to say hello and ask if we need anything. They knew our names and seemed to genuinely care about our comfort in their establishment. No more. We saw the proprietor going to lock the hot tub one night, she walked right by us and didn’t acknowledge us. Other than that, we never saw them. And there were a lot of us, occupying multiple rooms –the owners never bothered to say hello to a single one of us.
Nor did they make our friends feel welcome. A friend stopped by to chat one afternoon. She had her small dogs on a leash in the parking lot while she visited on the front porch. The pets were leashed, quiet, and never went inside. Pretty soon, someone came over from the office to tell our friend to leave the premises: pets are not allowed. This, despite the fact that a Labrador lives onsite with the owners and aggressively barked at us in the office on our arrival.
The last straw had to be the intrusive camera over the hot tub. The tub is locked, accessible only to registered guests, and the Copper King is not exactly a high crime environment, yet there are surveillance cameras everywhere. There is a camera situated above the hot tub -- not just monitoring the general area, but directly overhead looking straight into the tub. It seemed creepily voyeuristic that someone in the office was viewing my daughter and teenage niece as they soaked.
We are sad to say goodbye to the Copper King after many happy visits over the past 3 decades, but it is not the friendly home away from home that it used to be. We will be looking for a new home in Red River next time.
