Mountain Tranquility
By Gigs, 4/24/11
My husband and I spent a "couple's" weekend at The Evening Shade River Lodge located at the foot of Chimney Rock along the Broad River. We stayed in Room #8 (Appalachian Retreat) The room was very clean and nicely decorated. (My husband loved the raccoons!) The balcony porch was lovely to sit out on cool evenings with either a book (or in my case a travel harp). The grounds in the back along the river were beautifully maintained with benches, swings, a fire pit that was lit by our hosts every evening around 7:30p, and a gazebo with a grill. The hostess was very pleasant and outgoing. She had my husband and I grinning within two minutes of walking into the front door. The sound of the river was so peaceful and tranquil, it was lovely to sleep to (almost as good, if not better than rain...and we had both). If there was anything at all to complain about, it was only the street light located right outside the window over the head of the bed. (not the proprietor's fault). What a wonderful gem of a find at a very economical price. I would definitely recommend it to friends and family and/or return there myself in the future. Thank you SO much for the hospitality!

you've gotta try Evening Shade
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/18/11
My husband and I stayed at Evening Shade, celebrating our 22nd wedding anniversary. The staff welcomed us with balloons and a card. We stayed in the Bear Den room, loved the bear theme, very clean and cozy. We had a private deck overlooking the river. The hotel grounds are very pretty and well kept, loved the privacy. We were close enough to town to walk to everything. We will definitely stay here again!

Loved it- both times!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/11/10
My teenage daughter and I stayed here on 2 seperate occassions and found the rooms clean and cozy. Only problem we had was the upstairs neighbors walking the floors [in boots] and dragging chairs across the floor. Over all it was a quiet peaceful place to spend some mother-daughter time. No ringing phones or owners distrubing you. Just peace and quiet with a beautiful view. The bed was also very comfortable. I would recommend it to anyone who just needs peace and relaxation.

This was a bad vacation experience!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/27/09
Our experience at this cabin was the worst we have ever had staying anywhere. Our first day there after we had been seeing the local sights, we were accused of breaking pool cues and were told we would be charged for them. We were not guilty of this. The cabin was called the Lazy Lodge and the name fit. There was dust under all the tables and along the baseboards about an inch thick. It had backed-up sinks, 7 broken windows, shower knobs that fell off in your hands, an unusable fireplace, broken laundry facilities, loose toilet seats that took you for a ride when you sat on them, no sheets for the futons or trundle beds and the kitchen light flickered when you touched the switch. We were told that the shower had backed up in the master suite and it smelled like sewage. The towels and sheets that were on the beds were all soured. After returning home, we were then charged for a missing Dirt Devil charger and ruining 4 towels with bleach even though there were no laundry facilities. Out of our original one night deposit, they kept around $90.00. We recommend you do not stay at this hotel.

Great place
By T.J., 10/21/09
My husband and I really enjoyed the stay. It was quiet and peaceful. I really enjoyed sitting outside by the fire...along side the river. We visited Biltmore that weekend (recommend that) and it wasn't a long drive from Evening Shade. I would recommend anyone to stay and enjoy the great views.

A Great Place to Stay!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/13/09
The Evening Shade has a beautiful back yard that is accessible for all it's guests. You can relax on their swings, picnic tables, or one of the massive rocks near the river and enjoy one of, if not THE, best views in town. There are grills available for guests to use anytime and a firepit that is lit every night. The rooms are comfortable, clean, and maintained daily. The new owners are friendly and willing to accommodate in any way that they can. All in all, I can't think of anything that my family and I disliked about our stay- unless perhaps that it was too short!

Relaxation at its best
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/8/09
view is beautiful but room was musky smelling and needs a little updating. We never saw management after registering. The other managers use to start a fire each night. Not this one. We even had to go buy wood so we could even have a fire. Owners need to show their face a little more if they want business.

By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/28/09
We stopped here and fell in love with the place...the backyard has the Rocky Broad River running through with giant prehistoric looking boulders, its like looking back in time and sooo relaxing. We stayed an extra night and have told our friends about it. We wll we back!
