Negative comments about a lack of high quality hotels in an economically depressed area are ignorant. The lack of money in the City built by Springs Industries has allowed for a slump in investment capital to remediate old buildings downtown. That building is old, really old and with time nothing stays perfect. The hotel used to have one of the best restaurants in town. If USA companies would bring some manufacturing back perhaps there could be another fine restaurant in its place along with an updated Hotel.
I've known the Ellen Dean since I was a child (circa 1970's). I always thought it was like a homeless place for men. It scared the HECK out of me. It's just a bunch of rooms over some Salvation Army-like stores. A major dump with 25_year old A/C hanging out of a few dirty windows. I hated the place, even walking by it gave me the creeps. It has not changed to my knowledge. Do not consider taking your family there. The place would have been good for maybe Natl Lampoons Vacation as a joke.
