A great Pueblo Deco hotel
I'd seen the famous Shaffer Hotel on postcards for years, but it was an amazing experience to stay there! Located one block off downtown's main drag in tiny Mountainair, it was built in 1923 by Pop Shaffer, a talented folk artist and town blacksmith. He also made the colorful Mexican/Deco-style dining room counter, furniture, and ceiling lamps, stencilled the ceiling with American Indian designs, and built a fabulous cement gate covered with stone animals and more Indian designs. Pure 1920's Pueblo Deco! Just reopened, the rooms and hallways have been 100% renovated from top to bottom - very clean w/ all new fixtures, paint, and charming retro furnishings, but the BEST thing is that they left the original lobby and the incredible dining room just as were in Pop's day, and you've never seen anything like them! The hotel was spotless and the rooms quiet, and the managers, John and Karen, were fabulous - treated us just like we were guests in their own home. The hotel also has pool tables and exercise equipment. Centrally located, an easy drive to the Salinas Missions. Staying there was a really great experience and a must for history buffs!
