Great alternative to cabins
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/7/11
I love the homey feel to it, just rustic enough. We always get the room with the mini-kitchen/living room. It's not a 5 Star hotel, but hey, I saw moose from the front porch in the afternoon! Cool breezes at night, very nice owners/housekeepers. Small bathrooms/showers, towels are minimal, but that's what gives the place character! We go year after year- best place in town if you want something more than a cabin. Right around the corner from the only restaurant, bakery, and grocery in town.

What a dump
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/18/10
I seriously doubt they bothered to clean the sheets since the last customer. They certainly didn't put much effort in cleaning the shower. This is an old run down motel and they simply are doing the bare minimum, if that.

Biker Friendly Motel in Alpine
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/18/07
This little motel (owner is a biker) is right on Hwy 191/180 so after whipping through Hwy 191 from Clifford the Sportsman Lodge appears. Clean, quiet, good bed, friendly folks with cleaning stuff to clean your bike, and a good eating place at the Bear right around the corner. The fries were really good and the waitress (spiky hair) is a real character. Clifford to Alpine in 2 hrs 15 min on a BMW K1200LT; great ride for a sport bike or sport tourer.

We loved it!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/14/07
We had a wonderful time, it was a family reunion and all 38 of us enjoyed our stay. The rooms were neat, clean and everything worked. We found the owners delightful and committed to make our reunion and stay a great success, they could not have been more accomadating to our large group. The bathrooms are small by today's standards but none of us had a problem with them. The new tile and fixtures rival even the larger more well known motels. We have stayed in Alpine in all 3 of the motels at one time or another. The Sportsman's Lodge got all our vote for the cleanest, friendliest and best place to stay. We will go back at every chance we get. You can't beat the view from the front porch on an afternoon.

We will be back!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/8/07
We loved our stay and plan to go back. The rooms are all pine finished and the tile work in the bathrooms is beautiful. The place is clean and comfortable. The owners are wonderful and the calico cat in the lobby is adorable! From our window we saw wild turkeys, elk, and a friendly heard of cows each day. Down the road is the Bear Wallow Cafe with great food. This is a rustic setting and the lodge has done a good job of keeping the rustic feel, but giving us a clean, comfortable place to stay. Our room had a kitchen and it was fully stocked with dishes for us. Pam

Was just what we needed for a night and they let our cat stay too.
By mina, 7/17/06
They were willing to let us bring our cat inside. Nice people and great crowd staying there. Location isn't beautiful but rooms were clean and people friendly. Fine jumping off spot for looking the area over.

Couldn't pay me to go back
By Dan, 6/26/06
What a dump. You might as well put a sleeping bag out in the woods... at least then you will have a reason for all the bugs crawling all over you. I have stayed in quite a few low end hotels in my life... the difference is they charged low end prices and you get what you pay for. This place is about as far from a lodge as you can get. It is more like an old run-down motel from the movies where the crooks are being tracked down by the cops. The smell in the "office" should have been enough to make me reconsider spending any money, but exhaustion got the better of me. Too bad the exhaustion didn't make it easier to ignore all the creepy-crawlies in the room and let me sleep through the night. The rooms are tiny, and there isn't even a dresser. Although the closet did have an old hanger from a previous "tenants" stay. The bathroom was so small and cramped it was nearly impossible to shower or even use the toilet. Next time I am in Alpine, I'll be looking for someplace else to stay.
