Bargain Priced Eclectic Family Adventure

Truth or Consequences isn't a common travel destination, but if you're in the area and looking for something cozy and a little different, this is the place. We spent a week there at the bargain price of $25 a night. The rooms, decorated in a setback to the 70's, were hotel quality clean and came with a small refrigerator, outdoor gas grill, microwave, and refrigerator. They also boasted a nice covered patio out front with plastic chairs and a sidetable. We broke out a small blow up pool for the kids (which management kindly helped us fill with water), lit up the grill, and had several great evening meals with sausage and beer. One night a neighboring occupant joined us. Compliments of management, the kids also spent an evening coloring outside with sidewalk chalk. Motel is very pet friendly. Owners have dogs, cats, turtles, snakes, and fish, which our kids also totally loved. The motel was a great base for our outdoor entertainment. We enjoyed nearby Elephant Butte Lake and trips into the Gila Mountains via Hillsborro (about 30 miles away). One other unusual perk was the owner's had a water bottle rocket setup. Our kids (and my husband as well) totally loved participating in evening launches (what else are you going to do, the town shuts down at 9 p.m.). If you stay there, make sure to ask about it. All in all it was not your normal motel experience. If you feel adventurous but are on a budget, if you have pets or small kids, I highly recommend the Red Haven in middle of nowhere Truth or Consequences, NM.
