Executive Inn, Schulenburg

I rented a non-smoking room for one night. I immediately went to the hospital (la Grange, TX)to get my wife and returned to the room. The room was smokey and the linen smelled of smoke. I requested a refund on the room and was refused. The manager offered another room; however, being allergic to smoke, I refused the room and he would not return my funds. If you use this motel, check your room first. The room was not particularly clean either.

There is nothing good about this place. My room was not clean (thick layer of scum in the sink, crusty food scraps in the microwave), the walls were Scotch-tape thin, the key card had my room number written on it (terrible for security), and there was no security lock on the door (and this was a place where you might need one). Furthermore, the smell of strong, dank, musty curry permeated the lobby and breakfast area because the owners evidently cook and live there. The final detail that wrankled was that when I called to ask for a late check-out (because the children in the room next door started screaming at 7:00 a.m. and I wanted to get a little more sleep after they left), I was told that this was impossible because they needed the room -- and yet if I paid for another half day, "that wouldn't be a problem." Avoid this place, even if you have to sleep in your car!

I was taking my elderly mother to visit some relatives in Schulenburg. I drove from Nashville, TN. We were very tired from driving all day. The price quoted was not the price I was charged. Was quoted $55 and was charged $64.99. Indian woman at front desk was unfriendly and not helpful at all. Room had bugs in it. Furniture was being held up by nasty pieces of card board that looked like someone had pissed on them. Carpet had not been vacuumed in a long time as dirt was still on it. My elderly mother was so tired that she decided to just stay there. I was killing flies with a towel. I would not eat the breakfast do to this fact. I drove to McDonalds instead. I contacted the hotel after I got home. The same woman ansered the phone and said she was manager and that they were not controlled by the main company. I asked to speak to the owner and was only told his name, John Govin. I wrote Mr. Govin a letter with my concerns and yet have heard nothing from him after several weeks. I would rather sleep in an alley or a truck stop.

When I arrived in Schulenburg it looked like the nicest place so I asked for a price. The young Indian boy behind the counter told me $40 so I gave him my credit card and we settled in for the night. My wife saw the receipt a few hours later that said $62! When I went to the front desk to have this straightened out the boys mothers, perhaps the owner, said my quote was impossible and in fact our room should have cost us more. The next morning we got a call asking "are you leaving or paying for another night?" The rooms were clean enough but certainly nothing special. This place is run by a family of grifters. Stay at your own risk.

In town on business, called up this place at 2:00P and the Indian woman quoted rate of $40/night. Got there around midnight and price was jacked to $67.99. No other rooms available in town and had to pay (I think she knew that). Checkout 11:00. Meeting till 3:00P, wife asked for late checkout at 1:00 and was told the two extra hours would be $50 plus tax. Stay in Columbus, 20 mi away, Holiday Inn Express with all amenities for same price or stay at old, 'haunted' Von Minden Hotel in town for something different.
